Louis' toe nail just got ripped off Louis was laying on the heater vent keeping warm like he always does, when something scared him and he jumped up real fast. As soon as he jumped up he yelped. I didn't notice anything wrong with him at first. A little while later he started limping on his front left leg. I looked at his paw and noticed that his toe nail was just hanging there. (He must have caught the nail in the vent when he jumped up.) Now the toe nail is completely gone. It broke all the way off. He doesn't act like he is in any pain. Is there something I should do? Will it grow back? Poor guy, I know that had to hurt.:( Luckily it's not bleeding or anything. |
Just make sure it is clean and perhaps apply some antibiotic ointment. I like Mupirocin (Bactroban). You should call your vet tomorrow and have him look at it. These things can get infected and cause problems. Poor Louis...I am sure it did hurt. :( |

I think the nail will grow back. Put an antibiotic ointment on it til the vet can take a look at it. |
Poor Louis! I hope his little toe heals quickly and that his nail grows back. Give him hugs and love from me, Max & Teddy. |

1 Attachment(s) OUCH!! Poor little Louis!! My Angel got one of her toenails ripped off by a weedeater on the other side of the fence. I never thought about that string coming under the fence and it got her. She didn't make a sound but then she just wouldn't move and the blood started coming out of her paw. I rushed her to the vet and they didnt know if her nail would grow back or if it had actually taken off the top knuckle along with it. They bandaged it and had to keep that on for a few days. She milked that for all it was worth! ;)Attachment 334509 Anyway, good news is that it did grow back and she still has no clue with the relationship with the weedeater and her toe since it was so quick. Hope your little one gets better soon. Keep it clean and dry with anticeptic ointment. |

I bet she did milk it for all it's worth, She sure does look adorable holding that little paw up. Poor baby, glad she's better now. |
Oh, that sounds like it would hurt so much! Keep it clean until you can see the dr and like others have said to use a good antibiotic ointment. How is he doing today? Did he sleep ok last night? Poor lil guy!:( |

My Papillon, Spicy, won't stop climbing over baby gates and about 4 months ago she pulled her nail off climbing. Vet. said to put peroxide on it a few times a day. It's growing back now. My deceased Chihuahua lost a nail when she went into convulsions at 3 1/2 months old when she got a puppy shot, so they put her in a cage and let her flop, (the idiots) and the nail never grew back right. It looked like a stump. I'm glad to hear your baby is doing well. ;) |
Duke ripped out his dew claw one day this summer. No idea what happened as we were outside playing and all of a sudden he was limping. It hurt him for a while, but now a few month later, you can't tell. Hoping for a speedy recovery! |
My black lab, Crystal, once ripped out a nail out in the yard somehow. I found it hanging like you did and then it was gone. It did grow back, but it always kinda stuck upward after that rather than forward like they usually do. |
wow, glad to hear that he is doing better today. :) |
I was just popping in to see how he's doing~glad to hear is he is on the mend :) |
Dont worry! When Tess was 4 months old I accidently dropped a scrubbing bubbles refill on her foot. Blood everywhere. I felt AWFUL. Thankfully it was just 1 toenail that fell off and never grew back. After checking her out and washing her tiny paw I applied neosporin. She was fine, just a little shaken up. To this day I wont take anything off a top shelf if she is at my feet. |
This happend to Poppy a couple of weeks ago. I went out in the car and left her with my dad, he said she was just sitting by his feet on the floor and yelped really loud. He picked her up but couldnt find anything wrong with her.. there was no blood and she didnt mind you touching her anywhere (including her feet) so he couldnt understand what had happend. She was really clingy for about an hour after I came home, so I was sitting with her on my knee and stroking her chest when I felt something hard.. It was her nail. There must have been a little tat in her chest and she must have gotten it stuck in there and ripped it off. I got it out and there was no blood, but this is the strangest thing... I checked all of her feet to see which claw was missing and they were all there :/ |
Update.... Just wanted to give an update on Louis' toenail. Luckily it is already growing back! I didn't think it would happen that fast. |
