Bully Sitcks- How long can I let the pups chew? So Bully Sticks are a HUGE hit with Ivan and Iris. I'm so glad that I read about them here. Thanks to so many for recommending them. I'm not sure how long I can let them chew on them at a time. I took them away after about 30 minutes but I think they would have been happy to chew all day if I'd let them. My pups are pretty vigorous chewers, especially my boy, but even he only made a small dent in the stick. I gave them each the braided kind. Is it safe to just let them chew and chew without a break? I was worried that their jaw or gums might get sore from so much chewing or that they might digest too much and get an upset tummy. How long do you let your pups chew? |
Mine will finish a bully stick in about an hour and a half. I switched kinds, and the new ones upset their stomachs a little bit. So, I only let them chew for about 30 minutes now too. I gives them something to do for 30 minutes, makes the sticks last a little longer, and doing this has not bothered their stomaches like it does to let them have the whole thing a one sitting. So, it works for us this way. They are a great treat for them. |
I only let mine chew them for about 30-40 minutes, then cut off the soft part and put in freezer in a sealed container. If they go too long on them, they get loose stools. If given a choice, of course they would chew on them 24 hrs!!! lol |
I'll let Levi chew for 30-45 minutes a day. I just like to make sure they last longer than a day! |
Mine have bully sticks available, when ever they want them...But, maybe because that's the way it's always been, so it doesn't bother them...They chew on them for a while, then leave them, and come back when they want to...I had a boarder that ate a whole bully stick in 20 minutes!!! She did get loose stools...Soooooooo, when she comes back, I'm afraid I won't be able to give her one :(...I'd ask her owners if it was o.k., and they said yes, but they failed to tell me she had food issues...I'll say! |
Thanks for the replies. I guess we'll just stick to about 30 minutes at a time for now and see how they do over time with them. Right now they are super excited by this new treat but maybe they will learn to take breaks on their own. I hope it doesn't upset their tummies. My boy tends to have a sensitive tummy so I'm glad I didn't let him eat the whole thing. |
Dinky got his first one in December. He was crazed at first, so I had to take it away after about 30 minutes the first few times. Before the week was over, he would take breaks from it on his own. I learned about them here too. He sure does love them. |
They are readily available to Beau. He will chew a while and then take a break. They are ALL over the house. I think he hides them thinking we might want to chew them :-) |
My two chew for about 30 min, then leave them for a while and come back to them. The only thing I do is I throw them away when they get down to the size of my thumb, so it doesn't end up choking them. |
Mine don't like the bully sticks, I don't know why. They love the flossies, the sprial shaped chews by Merrick. I don't see anyone talk about those, are they bad? |

I just leave one out all the time for Jackson and he chews as he pleases. He never usually chews in one sitting. |
I started cutting the bullystick in half and give it to my babies so they can finish it. Carmel finish it quite fast...about 20 minutes? Emma takes a long time...so while Carmel watches Emma finish it, he goes crazy. Emma have grown to stand up for herself  I don't have to worry as much as before...cuz Carmel would bully her! I still make sure that she gets to finish her bullystick though. ;) |
