Golden gene? Hello everyone, I'm new to YT. I willbe getting my first baby girl in mid Febuary. I dont know much about the genes but my breeder informed me my girl carries the golden gene. I dont know if this is a good thing or bad? I want her a pet but if I do decide to breed her will this effect how my puppies will look? anyone with any info i would truly apreciate! Thanks everyone!:):animal36 |
Dont know anything about genes, breeding, or any of that....just wanted to say "welcome to YT"!:) |
For your girl to produce some gold colored pups she would also have to be bred to a male who carries the same gold gene or a full gold colored male. If she is bred to a standard color dog who does not carry the gold gene all pups would be standard colored yorkies. |
oh ok thanks, that was very helpful! |
You may get more responses in the Breeders section, but I would recommend against breeding your yorkie. I am a little concerned that this breeder is selling you a dog with breeding rights -- generally, a responsible breeder will require that their dogs be neteured or spayed. Do you have your heart set on this girl? If there is any doubt in your mind, I would suggest you find another breeder. It may save you a lot of heartache down the line. Lots of people here can help you find someone good in your area. |
Some breeders try to act like their dogs are "rare" or special because they do not fit the Yorkie standard. Each dog is special in it's own way, very few dogs are perfect specimens of the breed, and those are the ones that should be bred to produce the next generation. A dog that doesn't meet standard makes a wonderful pet though. Some of the things that might make a dog unsuitable for breeding would be off colors, or droopy ears, or the wrong type of bite, as well as health related matters and size. We as pet lovers can have these dogs as pets. A dog that has the golden gene should not be bred, it just means "running gold", and the color pattern is incorrect. To simplify the blue/black should only be on certain areas, and the tan/gold should only be on certain areas, but with a running gold, it's intermingled. Since the breeder said your dog is a carrier, you dogs pattern may look ok, I'm not sure why your breeder even told you this. Some breeders will try to market these dogs as more valuable, but this is just a marketing technique. |
This is what the YTCA (official breed club) has to say about off colors: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (Awards) A reputable breeder does not intentionally breed non-standard Yorkies. They certainly don't sell them with breeding rights. :thumbdown |
