Separation anxiety My baby Chloe is having horrible separation anxiety, every morning when i leave home for work she can't stop whinning and crying and scratching the door... (I leave her in the bathroom, which is pretty big, w all of her toys, plenty of food and water, and i blanket the smells like me)... i work really close from home, so i check on her during my lunch, but still, it breaks my heart in tiny little pieces to hear her cry every morning.. what can i do??? please help me!!! i feel like a horrible mommy, and i am afraid she is gonna start hating me!! :( |
It's really hard to see them going through that. It's so pitiful.:( There are a few things you can do to help her. Do you leave a tv on for her? There are little heartbeat pillows you can buy that they can snuggle with to help comfort them, too. Sometimes it helps, when you are home to pick up your handbag and keys, leave and stay gone for like five minutes and come back. Later, do the same and stay gone 10 minutes. Later, do the same and stay gone 15 minutes, etc. The purpose is to show her that you will always come home. Don't make a big deal of it when you leave. Don't make a big deal of it when you come back in, either. In fact, wait a few minutes until she calms down, to greet her. |
Staying in a bathroom with the door closed can seem really lonely. How old is your baby? Have you thought about an expen and putting everything in there? You can leave a radio on with a nice easy listening station on. It is good that you are checking on her, but when you leave, try not to make a big deal of it, or it can make her more stressed. If she is just a puppy, it should get better as she gets used to the fact that you will always come back. She is in a whole new world away from her mommy and littermates, it can take a while :) You can post this in the training section and probably get more advice and opinions. |
All of the above is good advise. I tried using the bathroom once, and Snickers HATED it, it's too enclosed. I think crates are terrible, so I agree fully with the ex-pen. I think it's b/c in a pen, the top is open and the pup does not feel so crowded. Also, leave the radio on for her so there is some noise. Snick has severe sep anxiety and is doing MUCH better now and wants to go in his pen all the time on his own. Good luck!! Snick & Viv |
i dont want to use a crate i hate those as well... i was looking into buying an ex-pen, but i live in an apartament and i dont have a place to put it... i am still trying to come up with a solution, thank you so much for all of your advise, i really appreciate it... :) |

I didn't catch that the bathroom door was closed. They don't like being isolated. It's scares them more, I believe. I would really urge trying to find room for an x-pen, put a sheet of vinyl under it, or even a vinyl shower curtain. Otherwise, a baby gate would be good - preferrably one that she can't climb up over and fall and hurt herself. If you don't change something there, the bathroom door is going to be destroyed and you're renting an apt, so you would be responsible for the damage.;) |
I have an apartment and just had to move around some furnishings to make space for it. I left it open during the day with all his toys inside and he learned to jump in and out and it became part of his normal routine. Then when I went back to work (was on vacation when I got him) it was just a matter of saying in you go and locking it. Now Teegy has fully access to the apartment but the area where the expen was is where is blanket and toys are and he always goes there with chews or toys to play. I would recommend that. |
1 Attachment(s) I agree with the other posters. I think a bathroom seems so segregated from the house. I use a playpen (for dogs). It folds up - we even take it with us when we travel. Something like that might work. Actually since I have two yorkies I have two playpens pushed together so they can go from one to the other. One is their living area and the other is their bathroom. When I just had one dog I just used one though. I got a "Nanny Cam" for Christmas. It helped show me that my one that gets upset settles down pretty quickly after I leave. Just yesterday I made a discovery about how to leave without Beemer getting crazy. We are staying in a hotel this week and I didn't want him barking. I use Red Barn dog food for training treats. Right before I left I sprinkled some treats around the living area of their playpen - in and around their bed and just kind of random. While he was running around checking out the treats, we left. No barking - no fuss. It was great!! I'm enclosing a picture my Nanny Cam took that shows my playpen setup. |
What kind of nanny cam do you have? i was thinking about getting one even though my husband thinks im nuts :) |

Folding Soft Sided Dog Exercise Pen this is one they sell at my local doggie shop I also found something called the "home 'n' go" play pen |
Sorry!!!! I'm out of town because my mother in law had surgery and they called us back for visiting hours. I got mine on Amazon.com. I just looked and it looks like this one might have been discontinued. This is the same one except in blue. They also have a new one that looks nice. This one has a removable top. These are the same size as mine. 36x36. It is small enough that we take it with us when we travel. I have one in our hotel room right now for mine. If you do shop Amazon - go to Yorkie Haven Rescue Yorkie Haven Rescue click on the Amazon Icon on the left side of the page and they will get a portion of the sale. |

I have to add that I love our puppy cam too. I'm so much more comfortable leaving them at home (though I still don't want to) when I can check in on them from my phone with the puppy cam. I couldn't say where it was from because my BF got it and set it up for us but I love it. |

Thanks for sharing all your ideas. :) |
I'm glad you started this thread because we are going through the same thing with our new little boy, Ian. We put a gate up across our bedroom door, and he stays there but will scream. whine and bark when we leave. He sounds like he is in severe pain when he does this. I'll have to find another gate because he jumped the one we have (after I threw the box out, so I can't return it). We couldn't believe he got out because it is pretty tall, but I'm so happy he didn't hurt himself. I plan to get Rescue Remedy for Pets on Monday and see if that will help. Since I'm on vacation and home a lot (in and out), I dread to see how he will act when I go back to work. You got a lot of great ideas from everyone. Hopefully one of them will help us. |
Yes....as Salazark said....giving a few treats as you're leaving works wonders. You always want to pair a "negative" event, like leaving, with a "positive", like giving a few treats. It will help with grooming issues too. You can get some soft training treats, break them into "tiny" pieces and give while they are learning to tolerate something new being done to them...teeth brushing, nail trimming, etc. Another thing that works well is a kong. It's a rubber toy that you can slip a treat into and the dog has to try and figure out how to get it out. After he eats his treats you've sprinkled on the floor (and after you've left your apartment) he will then turn to the kong to try and get the treat out. This will keep his little terrier brain busy for a good while after your gone. He won't be thinking of you. Also, leave on the radio or t.v. set. so it's not deadly quiet in the home. Hope you find this helpful. |
A similar idea I use a baby playpen called a PackNPlay for my Snickers who suffers from Separation Anxiety. Here is a thread of a friend who used the same idea: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ck-n-play.html Here is a pic of Snick's playpen....he loves it so much!! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...e-img_2468.jpg http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...e-img_2469.jpg He loves to look out the window and when we are home, he is always standing by his pen wanting to go in and chew his bully. I found mine used, very clean, and well kept for 10 bucks. Others have bought them brand new. It works very well, Snick is not a jumper or climber so it's perfect for him. Good luck--the pet pens look AWESOME!!!! Happy new year- Snick & Viv |

Well! Thx everyone... I just got Chloe a play pen on Amazon... And is pink!! :) I'm supposed to get it on Monday or Tuesday... Does anyone knows what are good puppy treats?? I tried pineapples and I don't think she likes them... She still cries her heart out even w a baby gate!! I hope the play pen comes in soon!! |
Blue Buffalo has some good training treats. They don't have anything in them that is supposed to set off allergies. I think they come in deboned chicken and deboned turkey. I use the turkey flavor. Daisy LOVES them. I was at Petsmart today and I saw that Wellness has some soft training treats too. They looked like they would be pretty healthy as well. I may try them too next time. |
1 Attachment(s) Avoid overly acidic treats as you may need to give a lot of them... I have to note Mello Mut MELLOW MUTŪ again (seriously they need to start kicking me some free product for all this promoting) Scoobers has major separation anxiety issues! Have you tried leaving the TV on or a radio? Now to be honest you need to work on the behavior aspect practicing leaving for short periods and showing you will come back etc. Please read up on various methods and exercises for people whom have dogs with anxiety issues-it won't just go away. The poster above me mentioned Blue Buffalo treats-they are good I prefer Zuke's Mini Naturals Zukes Mini Naturals – Dog Training Treats, The Perfect Training Treat for Dogs as they are made specifically for small dogs-you may want to use plain old boiled chicken breast for treats if you are going to be giving a lot in a single time period.[/FONT] So glad you got a play yard! If it doesn't work for you Target has a North gate 6 panel play yard in their baby section=it's cheap and worth a try because its easy to clean, I use the Best Pet soft sided play yard, if your baby escapes from the play yard you get try the target one I use a kennel (traditional hard plastics travel kennel) for my dog with separation anxiety-he's hurt himself otherwise...but now I have a room he can be free in so... |

Thats too funny, that's EXACTLY the play pen I got her!!! Thank u so much for ur advice!! I decided to practice some of it and it seems like is working..... I am letting her stay in the bathroom w a baby gate (until the play pen comes) while I am in the house w her... She cried a lot for about 30 minutes but I ignored it, I made sure she could see me every 10 minutes or so... And se got calm and quiet... Also when i left to have lunch w my friends, i made sure the TV was on.... It worked!!! Fingers crossed still works like that... I tried the baby carrots and she hated it... Tried the peanut butter treats, no luck... Pineapples... Nada... So now im going to try the plain chicken breast treats... Thx for all ur advice... U guys are great!!! |
