Hello Everyone! Hey! Within two weeks I will be the owner of a precious little Yorkie! He's six weeks and I can hardly wait to bring him home! I was trying to decide on a great name for him and your list of names was most helpful. So, now I'm deciding between Tristen, Mojo, and Caden. What do you think? If you have any tips or advice for me before I bring him home, it would be greatly appreciated! :aimeeyork |
Welcome to YT! I know a great dog named Mojo - love the name! Is it possible for the breeder to keep your dog until he is around 12 weeks old? From my experience and many others on this site, it is much easier on you if you do. The mom and litter mates help to train the puppy which makes it so much less work for you. He won't nip and bite as often, as he is shown by his mom that it isn't permitted. Six to eight weeks is very young for a small breed to leave its mom and you will get a dog that is way more self-assured if he is a bit older. There are also health issues that may result when they are so little. I know the excitement level is high when you are waiting but a few weeks won't make a difference in the long run and you end up with a much happier puppy. When you do get your little one, please send pictures and let us know what you name him!:) |
Hi and welcome to YT. Congratulations on your new pup. Most would agree that 8 weeks is a bit young for your pup to come home. I would talk with your breeder about this. If you have not had a puppy prior then I would seriously take a look at keeping him with his mommy for a bit longer. This will give him some more time to learn from his mommy and get a great start on his new life with you and your family. :) I would suggest that you give him something of yours so he can get used to your smell prior to him coming home. This will also help in his transition to you. It will also have his mommy's scent on it so it should help ease his anxiety too. Have you gotten your supplies as far as crate, bed, potty pads, food and water bowls, toys, blankies, clothes-just to keep him warm, etc? Best of luck to you once he comes home. I like the the Mojo. :) Can't wait to pics of him. |
Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Congrats on your new little one to be. (Do hope he will get to spend more time with his Mom before he goes to your forever home, though.) |

Hi Welcome to YT. Congrats on your new puppy I agree with the others about leaving the puppy with him mom a little longer. I have a 7 week old Shih Tzu puppy that we found abandoned. Generally I would never take a puppy in before 12 weeks. Oliver just happened to be very well adjusted. We took him to the vet to check for a micro chip and there was none, He is weened because he eats on his own, although he has only 2 teeth and he's wee wee pad trained already. His tests came back all fine he is utra healty. |
Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice! I'll definately talk to the breeder about that. |
You are getting great advice congrats on your new baby :) |

Another thing is their size.. they are so small, fragile and needs to watched ALOT.. Izzy came home at 13 weeks and I had to make sure she ate, drank etc... Yorkie Talk is a great place to learn about what these sweet little babies need. Everyone here truly passionate about the breed and wants to see the best care possible given. I'm so glad that you decided to come here and be a part of YT Congrats on your new sweet heart... Oh btw.. I LOVE the name Tristan!! |
Congratulations on your new pup!! I know it will seem like an eternity but it really does make a difference for the entire life of your pup. It's amazing how much Mom can teach them during that time. Welcome to YorkieTalk!!!! |
Yes, I agree too. I got my last dog a 5 weeks old. I was really young about 20 and I didn't know better. He was a Cocker Spaniel and despite all my love and training. He was still a biter and I couldn't do anything to him. I kept him his whole life and though I loved him to death...he wasn't as enjoyable as I would have hoped in a dog. He lived to be 12. I got my two new ones at 13 weeks and the difference is amazing. Eventhough they are a totally different breed, they are much more well adjusted. Congrats on your new puppy, I can't wait t see pics:) |
Thanks everyone for the advice! |
