Need some advice please Good Morning ~ I actually have this posted to an old thread I guess nobody goes to anymore so thought I would post here to get some advice. Thank you for any input ♥ Ok...so we took Teddi to the groomer 2 wks ago. When I picked him up she said she had expressed his anal glands as well as the trim, bath etc. I asked if he really needed it and if there was stuff in them and she said "A little." I was a bit bothered by that because I don't feel anyone but my vet should be doing it. I took him a few days ago and he has been at his butt constantly like something is biting him in the butt. He will be fine and then suddenly turn to his butt really quickly like he is being bitten or something. So tonight after my hubby came back from their walk Teddi pooed on the pee pee pad and Dave noticed it was stuck a bit - (he's been doing the typical puppy thing of putting everything in his mouth and I shed long blonde hairs). so it was stuck in there and he pulled it out but felt like there might be something still in there. He had me look at it and when I did I saw a little pink lump inside his puckering poop shoot. The anal glands are located on either side of his anus correct? Could the expressing have caused a hemmoroid?????:eek: I just am kind of freaking out a bit. Needless to say he will NOT be going back to that groomer, besides this incident here, the last time I took him in I had to leave him there for 2 hours before I could pick him up. We used to groom Gizmo ourselves after several attempts to find someone decent and them screwing it up. I just thought it would be easier for him to get used to it with the groomer first. I am so mad :mad: at myself for this! Any feedback or suggestions would really help!! Am thinking of taking him to the ER tonight. |
All I can say is that groomers do express anal glands. If you do decide to go to another one in the future, just tell them you don't want it done. I would suggest you take him to the vet to see what that little lump is. |
Anal glands can become impacted and they can rupture if they are expressed incorrectly. It's hard to say what I would do without actually seeing your Teddi's little rear end, but if it is the anal gland that is irritated, I would take him to the vet. Maximo's anal glands filled up/swelled after a vet manually retrieved a stool sample. This is when he was 13 weeks old. I took him back to the vet to have the glands expressed and they were full of fluid. When the glands immediately refilled, I talked to our breeder and she suggested feeding a few peas to bulk up the stool to express the glands naturally. The peas did the trick and neither of my dogs have ever had anal gland problems again. I use frozen baby sweet peas that have no added salt. Microwave them for a few seconds, cool with water, mash them up. Serve half a teaspoon. Hope Teddi feels better soon. |
Thank you Great advice from both of you ~ thank you so much! Teddi has an appointment with our vet this week for an ear infection follow up so he will be checked then. That's not until Wed. so will try the peas. I'm really more worried about that little lump I saw. I thought perhaps the groomer caused a hemmorroid if she squeezed it too hard or something. I guess I'll find out Wednesday. Thank you again♥ |

A pink bump on the outside could be an anal gland issue or it could be some type of razor irritation. The same goes for the biting. Both can cause that type of irritation. Unless he can't poop, there is no reason to go to the ER. Just have the vet look this week. Emptying, particularly with no good reason, can cause issues like further need to do the same, but I doubt the lump is from squeezing too hard. |
