How do you set up your Ex pens?? I know many YT'rs have creative ways of making an special area for their babies. I was wondering how everyone set up their ex pen areas. I have friends who are new puppy owners and I want to show them pics of how best to set up their expens/potty area/sleeping...etc. Thanks:) |
Shoot, I don't have pictures handy, but I like using mine more as a fence. I have an area in the living room that is a natural wall on one side. The fireplace and a chair block them in on one side, so I just use the xpen to close off the other end. It makes a U instead of a square, and I can double the length I can seal off with one 10 foot xpen. |
Well right now we are using it outside so she can go potty... there snow on the ground so my husband clears a spot and we put the expen there so she can go to the bathroom. :) |
When she was little we set it up as a square, just big enough for a potty pad, bed and food and water bowl. The potty pad covered almost the entire floor. After a few weeks I made the potty pad a little smaller so you could see some floor. After about a month I bought a second x pen and added two panels so it became a rectangle still keeping the potty pad, bed and food and water bowl inside taking her out only when we played. As she got older I used the x pen to block off the entrance to my kitchen and living room and she had the entire kitchen to explore. It took her about a year but now she finally potty pad trained. I don't have pictures. |
I set up a square. However, before setting it up I place a plastic picnic table cloth down, on top of that I place huge ruber tile squares (obtained at WalMart in the excercise department). I place the x-pen on top of the squares and secure it at each corner of the x-pen with tie-wraps. I do this to protect their little knees and legs. Inside x-pen area I place a pet tent, a small donut bed, pee pad in a corner, toys, water bottle and food plate attched to the side of the x-pen. For those pups that are climbers I add a top. |
I put 2 pee pads down on one side and her bed and a couple of toys on the other side along w/ her water and food bowl. |
4 Attachment(s) This is how I sat it up when they were babies, and in training. I did put pads down, attach water to the fence and then give toys and chews. I took them out every hour to potty, run, play and every other time I'd train them to come, sit and stay. Of course when they got older, the "come" flew thru their "airy-heads" if they seen or heard something worth investigating.......like that UPS truck or birds. Three pictures are of Spicy when her first mom set up a place for her and another pup. As you can see, lil ol ms. Spicy wouldn't be kept penned in. :D |
Here is the page that shows pics of Peytons x pen. I'll put down a tarp and cover it with a blanket to protect the floor. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...s-nursery.html |
1 Attachment(s) I have a play yard for dogs so it have a floor in it and a zip up mesh top. I put the bed, food and water on one side and potty pad on the other side I love it and so do they...Harley goes in without me even telling him:D and Bella is pottied trained now so she has full run of the house. This is the doggie play yard I use I have 2 one upstairs that is 44x24 and a 57x36 down stairs...They come in all sizes and colors you can order them online from Ebay...dog accessories..xpens. and very easy to keep clean. |

I set my x-pen up when the babies were young in a retangular shape. Potty pads at one end bedding at the other and food in the middle. I now have add 4 xtra panels and put it around the room they stay in when I am gone since they like to chew on the coner of walls. My babies bedding I buy either at 2nd hand stores for babies or yard sales. I have found some nice blankets very cheap and in excellent condition. The baby mattress pad protector works real good for potty pad or floor protector. |
Great thread...I am soon getting Snickers a brother and am looking into an x-pen for him. I am thinking about getting this one: Walmart.com: IRIS 4 Panel Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Pen White: Dogs I hate Walmart with a passion, but this pen has so many great reviews. I am going to get a piece of linoleum and cut it so it fits right into the pen and then put his bed, potty pad, toys, food, and water in it with him. I am thinking I will use it also as he grows and I leave them home alone together. But not in the beginning, it will only be puppy's. I hope someone else has this same pen and give me some feedback on it. Please post pics of your set-ups!!! I am a visual learner!!!:););):D Peyton's nursery is DARLING!!!!!!!!!! I have been wondering how to set up an ex-pen for my new puppy. So far I found this ex-pen that I like. It is the Richell Expandable Pet Pen Small w/Floor Tray. Has anybody used this ex-pen before ? http://www.richellusa.com/catalog/ex...r-tray-88.html I was thinking of getting a divider at one end and put the pottie pads there. You can get the dividers with doors like this one as accessories: http://www.richellusa.com/catalog/pe...er-small.html# and also a wire top in case he tries to climb or jump out: Expandable Pet Pen Wire Top Small - Pens - Pet Products Please let know your thoughts on the ex-pen |

I have that play yard which I put in the x-pen, with a donut type bed, but they prefer to sleep on the potty pad in the x-pen (guess they like to look out at what's going on), so I gave up throw toys in the play yard and laid a blanket for them to sleep on. It's nice though, seems so cozy/quiet area, stays a little darkened --- I would think they would prefer to go in there and sleep, but who knows the minds of a pup??! Kendra |
