Just got my yorkie 2 days ago, he's 12 months old. I'm kind of new to this thing. I wanna know what's the best food I can give him. Shampoo? How to potty train him. We've spent atleast 15 minutes outside and he won't go. But when we come back inside he'd pee.

Welcome to YT.:) First, you will need to stay outside with him until he goes. Sometimes that will be a long while, but if you bring him back in before he goes, you will be guaranteed that he will potty inside. Before you take him out, ask him if he needs to go potty (at this stage he may not understand but will later). Take him out and tell him to go potty. If you have a fenced yard, then just stay out with him and keep telling him to go potty until he goes and after he does go, make a big deal of it and praise, praise, praise him. Let him know how pleased you are. You can also give him a tiny treat each time such as a cheerio or a tiny piece of cheese.

You have many questions. Please read the stickies at the top of each forum on this site. There is a wealth of information in them that will answer most, if not all, of your questions.

Also, has your little guy already been neutered? If not, you need to have that done. Has he been checked out by your vet yet? Please do so this week.

I feed my two Wellness small breed. Since yours is a year old then you could feed him that too. Just be sure to gradually switch so he doesn't have tummy issues.
Shampoo: I like Bio-groom Fluffy Puppy and Bio-groom Silk Cond. I've tried a lot, my two have more products than I do...and I Love products! Bio-groom seems to work best for me. :) Congrats on your new baby!

Its cold outside in the 30's and I'm worried he might get too cold or something. He's got a vet appointment this week. But the neutering thing. Gremlin is my christmas gift from my boyfriend and he doesn't wanna get him neutered, he's planning on studding him out.

But what do you bathe your yorkies with? Something that I can easily get from petsmart or petco. I'm not really into the whole ordering it online.

Right now I'm feeding him puppy chow, is there anything better? Maybe eukanuba for yorkies or "blue"

Welcome to YT! You'll find lots of great information here. Check out the health and diet section for suggestions on feeding- puppy chow (or anything you buy in the grocery store) is a really poor food choice. Yorkies have sensitive stomachs, can have food allergies and are prone to developing pancreatitis- so a healthy diet is a must. The food may seem like it's expensive at first, but with higher quality foods, you end up feeding less per meal and you will end up with a healthier dog (meaning less in vet bills). I alternate between Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild.

I hope you think long and hard before you decide to stud him out. You first of all need to know if he is a good representation of the breed. Then you will need to have his hips and knees certified. Then you will have to have him checked for STD's. Then you will be on the hook for half of any guarantees offered by the dam owner if one of the pups has a congenital defect.

Breeding isn't done for fun or just because you want to. It's a serious business and the sad truth is, the vast majority of the health problems we see in today's yorkies are due to irresponsible breeding practices. Do you really want to add to that?

Then, you have to take in to consideration that an unneutered male is going to have more behavioral problems than a neutered one (marking, going nuts if there's a female in heat in a large radius, more likely to try and get out). There are also health risks involved with not neutering.

I use Taste of the Wild and my own shampoo-Matrix brands. Huh you've had him two days, he might be having bowel issues since he has just under gone a huge life change...Elvis didn't potty for a couple days I took him in for his wellness health check at the vet and he was compacted...then we got a stool sample-he was loaded with worms! Have you scheduled a health check with the vet? Get your lil guy a sweater or a jacket and post some pics! Congrats!

Hey everyone, Im Mr. Gremlins co owner lol. Hes 12 weeks old not months though. He is scheduled today for his second set of puppy shots, hes now starting to potty outside thankfully :). And is learning to sit! Today after his shots we will go and pick him up some healthier dog food, and start the weaning process. We will try to take some good pics of him today for everyone to see

Are you an experienced yorkie owner or breeder?

No I don't have any experience with Yorkies, I bred my Blue tick hound though. And done well in raising the puppies and finding them good homes, but probably the biggest problem in raising puppies... I got attached to them lol. And had a hard time selling them lol.

Since he is 12 weeks old, recognize he is very young and going through a huge adjustment period.

Regarding foods, you likely want to get him off of puppy chow if it is a standard grocery store type brand. There is a wealth of good information on this site about various food products - research and find what seems to be the best fit for you, your budget, and your pup.

Regarding potty training - consistency is the absolute key. Keep him (and yourselves) on a strict schedule. Every day: wake up at the same time, feed at the same time, go outside to potty at the same time (and frequently); rest and bed at the same time. It may seem like a pain but keeping a strict schedule will pay dividends quickly.

Resist any temptation you have to give him people food as "holiday treats"; keep him on his own food / treat diet.

You mentioned in a post an interest to breed. Since your immediate focus is on adjustment and training, take the time to educate yourselves on what breeding really entails. There is a lot one must know to do so properly and responsibly. This site offers a wealth of knowledge. Make use of it!! :)

I don't see where they mentioned breeding-must have been another thread hope they know they have at least 3 years before they'll even know if they have a breedable dog...to find out about nay genetic disease he may have (carry) behavioral issues, his final developmental result; coat, statures, etc...
