Need help with 8 year old yorkie I just recently got a yorkie from a breeder that is no longer breeding her. She just turned 8 on december 6, 2010. She is still drying up from puppies. She does not let me know when she has to go outside to go potty. She has no bark it is like she opens mouth and all that comes out is a grunt. Also she has bad breath. Can anyone tell me what I need to do for this beautiful puppy it is time for the attention to be on her not what she can do for somebody else.:confused::):) |

I was going to add that I wouldn't use a crate at all. She has probably spent her life in a kennel. I would use an x-pen when you can't watch her. |
Welcome to Yt! You might try some minty treats b4 she goes for her 1st dental! Did you take her for a wellness visit at the vets? I would try weewee pads to house train. I agree with Karen, no more crates! Lots and lots of affection!Please keep us updated! God bless you! How awful that she might of been debarked! |
Poor little girl. Hopefully, she's already been to the vets for a checkup. If not, that should be your first stop. As already mentioned here, the teeth could be the cause of her bad breath. Her diet could be another. The link to rehabbing a puppymill dog is a good place to start. Post pictures of her soon. Oops, forgot to add that as far as minty treats go, don't feed her people mints. Many contain artificial sweeteners that are poisonous to dogs. Brushing her teeth with a dog-friendly tooth paste may help until you can get her in for a dental cleaning. |
That's just sad. I would take her to the vet to have her teeth looked into and see if there is anything else physical that she need. You need to treat her like a puppy, because she has apparently never had any training. This means she has also never had any attention or affection, so just give her lots and be patient with her. Since you are the first human to ever be kind to her, don't be surprised if she gets really strongly attached to you! These deprived dogs often turn out to be extremely loyal. |
I agree don't use a crate I think she's had enough in her lifetime. My pet store sells doggy mints I use them on Zach sometimes. God Bless you for taking in this little girl and giving her a good home for Christmas. |
I got my yorkie the exact same way you did except she was 7 yrs old. She had all of the traits your yorkie has when I first bought her home. The very first thing I did was take her to the vet. Her teeth were rotten, she had worms, fleas and earmites and all of her hair had to be cut off because it was so badly matted. I also had to get her spayed. She ended up loosing all but 4 teeth. Most of her vet bills were because of her teeth and spaying so be prepare to spend some money to get her healthy again. It cost me about 1200.00 (not all at one time) to get her healthy and she still has the occassional urinary tract infection but overall she is now in excellent health. She was horribly neglected. she also was used for breeding. As for potty training, I am still working on that. She still doesn't let me know when she has to potty so I keep her on a strict schedule when I am at home and she stays in her expen when I am at work. I don't put her in a crate only an ex-pen. It was worth whatever trouble I had to go through because she is worth it. It's now 2 yrs later and she is thriving. She just needed someone to love her unconditionally. |
