Traveling Without Being Housebroken Stormy and I will be visiting family in Cali for Christmas, yaay! We will primarily be staying in two homes during our stay. Unfortunately, Stormy still isn't housebroken. I intend on taking puppy pads, but I'm sure accidents are inevitable. I feel bad being that it won't be my carpet getting damaged. Has anyone ever traveled while their baby was still not housebroken? I'm considering getting diapers, but I don't think Stormy will like that and I don't want to do that to her either. |
I traveled with Armani when he was not totally housebroken- we brought a belly band, a crate, and a bottle of natures miracle! I either put the belly band on him or locked him up when I could not watch him like a hawk. He did have one accident which I cleaned up with natures miracle. |
Well, I can't take the carpet cleaner with me since we're flying and they don't allow liquids. But maybe I could use one of my liquid containers for that. I can't bring her crate, though, bc I can't take it on the plane with me. She's never slept on the bed with me for other than naps bc I worry about rolling over on her but I know she won't pee on the bed so maybe I'll just have to sleep with her  |
I agree with ArmaniMan's advice. I would also add lots of walking. We took Tallulah traveling at Thanksgiving, and every chance I got, I put her in her harness and leash and we went for a stroll. She loved it, and I got the benefit of burning off some of those holiday calories as well. Hopefully by the time you get to CA, the dog will still be Stormy but the weather will not. |

You might look at one of the folding fabric and mesh crates. I have three of them now for T -- one for her permanent sleep area, one that gets moved around the house as needed, and one in the car for travel and (knock wood) emergencies. The small size is plenty big for Yorkie down time and would fit in a suitcase without using too much room. I bought mine at amazon.com and ebay, but the other day I saw several at my local feed and fuel store. |
Actually diapers don't bother them a bit. I put diapers on mine when we go to someone's house. They are pad trained and at other's houses they assume that all throw rugs are pads. It saves embarrassment. They squat just like normal, they have no idea they are going in a diaper. I use pampers or huggies. When we are on a long car ride (10-12hrs) they don't go at all, they hold it until we get home. I take off the diaper and they head for the pad. But, seriously, they don't bite at them or try to remove them. Just make sure they are big enough for comfort and if necessary use doggie panties over them to help keep them from sliding off. It will save you a whole lot of stress during your visit. This is for the yorkie girls only. Bear and Baxter are strictly potty outdoor boys and that is what they do on visits as well, no diapers for them, ever. JMHO, everyone has to decide what is best for them and their furkids. |
I didn't know you could use baby diapers! I thought I had to buy the doggie diapers. That might not be so bad then :) How do I know which ones to get her? Do they go off their weight? I don't have kids so I'm diaper retarded ha. That's a good idea, Armani. I saw a cheap pop up kennel the other day - hopefully they still have it. Lol boopster. It's been in the 80s here, so stormy weather will be a nice change! |
the Number 0 new born, should b ok for furbaby that r small, or number 1 for baby that are 7-9 ibs. Gatsby has been having potty problems. I just take a disposable pad and lay it in the most non discript place i can find (under an end table) and show it to gatsby once i put his pee-on jar on the pad he will use it once so i have to keep on top to keep the pad clean but its worth it I would feed on a strict schedule so you can t6ake her out every 15 min until she pees and poops |
I use their weight, and buy accordingly. When I see them doing whatever ritual they do before they poop, I scoop them up and take them out, or to a tile surface, or pee pad and get the diaper off. Smashed poop on a diaper and butt is really messy...LOL way easier to pick up tootsie rolls. The real cool thing about todays disposable diapers is that you can put them right back on if they haven't peed in them.... I think if I had a yorkie boy, I'd throw a huggie or women's sanitary pad into a belly band and use that! |
