What's the best tip you've picked up from YT? I've gotten some great tips from this site. The one I've used most recently had to do with putting Scarlett in a Onesie after her spay. The vet was very impressed with how well her incision healed because she didn't lick or bite at it. So, what tip has been most helpful for you? |
Being a previous owner of all LARGE dogs - I think one of the important things I learned immediately was to use a harness instead of a collar...but there were really so many helpful tips it's hard to pick just one. Oh - and to always keep Pumpkin on hand. |
I don't know about MOST helpful, but I know when I first joined, I hadn't a clue about harnesses/collars. That was all new to me. I had only ever put a collar on a dog in my life. I had no clue about vaccines and vet care type things. I just was always one of those do what the vet says and not really question. After Jackson's 12 week old vet appt. and a reaction to lepto, I began learning things on this site. I was clueless about food... only after reading a few bad things about Nutro (and still being convinced it couldn't be THAT bad... after all, my families dogs had always done well on crappy foods :rolleyes:)... so then I began to research and form an entirely different opinion. If I hadn't found this site (about a week before getting puppy Jackson, if I remember correctly), I probably would be a totally different dog owner! |
I would also have to agree with the harness/collar. I always had big dogs and we always used collars but I learned about the harness from YT. Scooter and Sadie are better today because of YT. MY babies are spoiled |
I would have to say there where 3 main things I learned... 1. The harness 2. The food.. I was WAYYYY off... we used to feed Dimond Natural.. Now we use Orijen and Primal Raw..lol 3. That puppy mills and Back yard breeders... I know there are more.. But that what sick out |
I've received so many great tips here, I even wrote a thread on Your Best Tips http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...best-tips.html, but the number one best tip I ever received here is to check out the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America when I was looking for a breeder. I really didn't know anything about breed clubs, and had never heard of the YTCA. I thank whoever told me about them, and I found a wonderful breeder through them. Joey 4 and healthy as a little horse, and this is such a huge relief! Second best tip, is Bully Sticks, third is Petz Life, oh and at a Yorkietalk meet up I met Ann, and she had her boys in a Buddy Belt Harness. I love all these products! At four, Joey's teeth are still good, and his trachea is safe! I read about the onesie way after Joey was neutered, I love that tip, for two weeks we couldn't give him a bath, and the onesies would have been a great idea! |
I would have to agree with the harness instead of a collar, also a lot of useful potty training tips. One really important tip was always have a collar and ID tag on your dog even with harness for indentification purposes. I would have never thought of that. |

Best Tip: I read on Yorkie Talk about using a tube sock after spay surgery. After both of my girls had their spay surgery, I took a tube sock, cut off the foot part and then slipped it on so it covered the surgery site. It worked perfectly and I didn't have to worry about them licking themselves. Both girls wore the sock while they slept and when I couldn't watch them. |
What I learned... 1) puppy mills, byb, and all the cruel things happening to dogs [& dog rescues] 2) harness instead of collars 3) LP, glycemia (nutrical), collapsed trachea, etc. 4) teeth: brush their teeth, pull baby teeth during spay/neuter at one year old 5) food 6) how to be a better dog owner... I have learned a lot and I hope I will continue to learn more about yorkies as I LOVE yorkies to death!! forgot to add, I also learned that puppies should stay with their mom until at least 12 weeks old. Will definitely make sure this happens when I get my next pup! I have definitely also become more knowledgeable on picking the breeder to buy my pup from. As many other YT members say, You want to buy the breeder, since the money you use to buy the pup is basically supporting the breeder. |

Wow. So many as Lucy has liver issues so I learned a lot about what foods to feed; good supplements; foods to avoid . . I learned about harnesses vs. collar. I learned that I never want to breed my Lucy; and I also learned (sigh) about luxating patella ~ when surgery might become necessary and when it is avoidable. |

One of the most valuable things I've learned from Yt is to get pre-op blood work done Before yorkies I've had several dogs altered but never once did the vet suggest pre-op blood work. Only because of YT postings did I know to ask...and, now I wouldn't think of having a procedure done without testing. |
