Is my little Levi gaining weight too fast?
 
When we went to the vet 3 weeks ago he weighed 1.5 pounds. When he went to the vent today he weighed 1.13 pounds. This seems like a lot of weight gained in such a short period of time to me but I'm new to being a dog owner. Both Levi's parents weighed 4 pounds so genetically speaking, I know he should weigh about the same give or take a little.

How old is he? Do you free feed? What kind of food are you feeding?

Genetics goes back farther than just the parents. 4 pound parents can have 10 pound offspring and vise versa.

That seems like a normal amout of weight to me. did the vet seem concerned?

Levi will be 12 weeks old tomorrow. We are transitioning to Orijen puppy right now and we free feed due to the high risk of hypoglycemia the first 12 weeks of their lives. He usually eats just until he is full and will leave food in the bowl when he has had enough to eat. He doesn't just gobble it up just because it's there. The vet didn't seem concerned at all.

The rule of thumb is to double their 12 week weight, give or take a pound, so it sounds to me like he is right on target to be around 4 pounds.

I free feed mine all the time, even the adults, I don't have any that overeat.

Apple weighed, exactly, 2 lbs. @ 12 weeks old, and she weighs 5 1/2 lbs. now, and is perfect...Btw, she is 2 yrs. and 2 months old and spayed...I did have to watch her weight, after she was spayed, because she was getting a little fluffy lol...But iatyq, I think that is still pretty small for a 12 week old boy...AND, you might think you want a tiny one, but, after I got Apple, thinking she would be tiny, I was, totally, ready for her to weigh 5 lbs...They're just so fragile, when they're under 5 lbs...

1.13 pound is LESS than 1.5 pound not MORE! Are you talking decimals or do you really mean ounces????? Even if you meant one pound 5 ounces to one pound 13 ounces that is only a gain of 8 ounces in 3 weeks -- not too much at all. Puppies do gain weight when they are healthy.

Yes I did mean 1 pound 13 ounces. It just seemed to me that a half a pound is a lot in a 3 week period but I guess not. I'll just relax and be happy that he's healthy. I don't mind if he ends up weighing more than 4 pounds. I just don't want him to be on his way to obesity. That's my only worry.

I remember that Bear weighted 1lb more every month we went to the vet for his checkups and vacines for the first 6 months ( we got him when he was 8 weeks, 2.5lb).

Now he is at stable weight of 8-8.2 lb for the last couple of months and he is 14 months old.

I guess they grow fast up to 6 months or so and then they slow down.

Zach gained a half a pound in two weeks. The vet called it a growth spurt. His mom weighed 6 llbs and his dad weighed 7 1/2 lbs. Hopefully Zach will be in between the mom and dads weight.
