Could get a 4yo boy free if I wanted.. Called the vets here in town to see if they knew of any local breeders, and I called a woman who lives in town. She breeds, and has only one male she uses. She had rescued a male from someone..but doesn't get alng with her other male, so will give him away! he is 4 yo, 4 1/2 lbs. She said he only has one testicle though? Would this cause a problem (im not getting one to breed!) May go look at him today or tomorrow. Wonder how it will all work out. Wanted a female originally, but could easily be persuaded if he's cute enough! |
I think if you're not going to breed then having only one testicle should not cause any health issues? But I am not a vet so not for sure. If he's healthy and all and you two seem to bond I'm thinking you found a wonderful deal!!! Hopefully once you spend some time visiting him and checking out his personality you will fall in love with him and provide him w/ all the love and devotion this little guy deserves. It wont cause a problem if your not gonna breed but he should be neutered because there is a higher chance he can get testicular cancer. That sounds like a good deal I would get him. |
He will definetly get fixed. She said he is not house trained, but we have a large kitchen/hallway/laundry room I can gate him off in until he is. Didnt even think to ask his name? Sadly, I wont be able to change his name at that age, will I? I am trying not to get my hopes up too much...hope he has great coloring and all....we shall see! Wish I could get DH to go see him tonight, but otherwise I'll probably go tomorrow :) |
I would agree that if you get him fixed that he should be fine!! As long as he as a good personality and you get along good with home, he should be great addition to your family!! |

I don't want to throw water on your fire, but here are some things to consider.... First, he is 4 years old and not potty-trained. This means that he, most likely, is going to be *much* harder than most other dogs to potty-train. Do you have the time and energy to devote to this? You know he doesn't get along well with some other dogs (ie the breeder's male dog). How much are you hoping to have him out-and-about? Is it important to you that he get along with other dogs? The undescended testicle... You're not planning to breed so that part isn't an issue. It used to be thought that an undescended testicle contributed to a male being more aggressive. I'm not sure if that is the school of thought now or not. Might be wise to ask a vet about this (?). IF you're okay with these issues then... GO FOR IT! And... GOD BLESS! The dog needs a good home. I just want you to go in with your eyes open, okay? |
Oh, by the way, I think that you can change his name. *Might* be easiest if you choose something that sounds a little like his current name. But, even if you don't, I bet that he'll learn the new name quite quickly! |
It isn't real important that he get along with other dogs. he would be the only one (at least for quite some time) As far as the "agressive behaviour due to one testicle" not sure if its true or not. I have a friend who has another dog with only one and he is no way an agressive dog (can't remember the breed though) BUt thanks for the heads up. As for time training. I am a stay home mom. Sure I have days where Im gone a few hours...but then he'll be crated or in the laundry room. I will just make it my goal to have him trained!! |
What a great deal. I bet it will be love at first sight. Sound like he just needs a new home with lots of love. Some Yorkies like One On One Attention. I'm happy to hear the breeder rescued him, but if she has lots of furbabies, it might have been too much for him. Good Luck! Keep us posted. |

One more thought about the house-breaking. It would be interesting to know if the previous owner kept him inside or out. If he's not housebroken because he was an outside dog, this actually *helps* you. In that case, he's used to the feel of grass under his feet when he potties. He would potty-train faster than an inside dog who was never trained. What name do you have in mind? |
FirstYorkie- I was just thinking the same thing! If being inside will be new to him, then it may be no harder then just training a puppy. (I can hope, right!) Not sure on name yet. If he's an outside dog, he may not be 100% attached to his name (dont know it yet, waiting for the woman to call me back!) We had a girls name all ready (Sadie) but now I have no idea! A few I like are: Tanner, Tucker, Chance, Trent (no idea where the "T" theme is coming from..lol) Guess if we can rename him, I'll have to see him first! |
