New Yorkie Mom
 

Hello! :) I am the new mother to a yorkie! I got her at 5 weeks old, she is currently 7weeks. I love her to pieces! I have never had a small dog, so it is fairly new to me.

She has a brother. He is a himalayan kitten, who happens to be the same age just two days apart. They are really cute together.

I joined this site in hopes to learn more about her breed, I have always wanted a yorkie, never thought I would get one! :)

She is still young and hasnt finished her shots as of yet, although they are started.

I have so many questions lol! I ant to be the perfect mom!!

Welcome. did I read this right...you got your yorkie a 5 weeks? If so, how in the world did that happen....she was just a wee little baby? Well, she still is.
I'm thrilled she is now 7 wks and apparently doing ok.

I am in shock. I cannot believe that someone would sell a 5 week old puppy. Mine are still nursing and they are 7 weeks. it makes me sad to think about taking these guys from their momma.

I wish you the best of luck. There are so many things that her mother would have taught her had she been left with her until 10 or 12 weweks old. How to play nice, how to be a good pack member, where to potty etc.

she is young and surprising not a drama queen! :) I'm trying to potty train her, but with it being cold out.. it doesnt help much. I think she is learning from my kitten, which isnt a good thing! The play.. and my kitten is wild!! lol

I did kind of worry about her getting taken away early also, the lady who sold her to me said she was six weeks, but then later emailed me and said five. Since then I have read and am learning that it was still to early.

We moved last weekend and I have a mirror still on the floor against the wall, She walks by it.. stairs and cries.. its the cutest saddest thing!!

Also.. I am noticing she is having a poop problem... Like its to big to come out.. and it sticks in her fur... I take her to get her second shots next weekend and was going to bring this up.. I think I will start reading the ER or Health forum..

You have to trim the hair ofn her butt so the poop does not get stuck. If she becomes impacted it can be very serious.

Lift her tail and look at her butt to make sure it is clean, if not, you need to get the dried poop off and then trim the hair back.

Even if it is clean, you need to trim the hair.

There are many knowledgable people on here who will be so willing to help with the much needed guideance of this wee little one.

I'm a first time yorkie owner and got Zhoie at almost 13 wks, can't even fathom one at 5 wks. Do they have teeth yet? I just keep thinking the care that's needed must be tremendous. Am I right in thinking this?

I think if she was still with her family she would be the trouble maker. :) Well, the leader of the pack. She is a good dog.. just very stubborn. (that's why I say she is learning from my cat!) She asks like she already knows the meaning of the word no. We are trying to teach her "outside" and so far.. she isnt that bad with it, if she does poop indoors, its by the back door, which leads me to believe she is getting it.

She does have teeth, as little as they may be! :) I was told to give her dry food. I do, but she wants nothing to do with it, so I moisten it up with warm water. She does want to eat everything we eat! I guess she loves the smell. We don't feed her human foods, I am just to scared to! She does beg really had though!

Trimming her butt hair: I started doing that today, although she is feisty! She doesn't like to sit still for long! I thought shed be the cute little puppy to carry in a bag. I'm quickly learning she has a mind of her own and seems to be a tom boy!! lol

The other day when she pooped it was as if it was just to big to come out, she cried a little.. and tried to get it out for at lease 4 hours... It scared me, but I didnt have a car in that time frame to take her to the vet! She is fine now.. I just dont know what happen.

Her fiewstiness might be cute now, but phaving not been socializxed by her mother, I'm just warning you that the fiesty might turn into aggression down the road.

Their mothers begin to teach them how to be a good pack member at around 8 weeks olde. they play with them and scold them if they bite too hard. they roll them onto their backs to teach them submission.

Being a mere human, we don't understand their language, so although we can try to emulate the mother, if we do it wrong, it can cause other issues.

Here is a link to my site, with some exercises to to help establish yourself as the pack leader. She is very young, so strart slowly, but I have done the first 2 exercises with my 7 week old puppies and they have passed every test.

PS you DO NOT want her to think she is the pack leader. That can cause huge problems as she ages. It might seem cute now, but now is the time to "nip it in the bud"

Also I feed mine baby rice cereal and canned goats milk (diluted one to one) and mix in some canned pedigree for puppies, lamb and rice. I feed the dry Royal canin babydog formula for puppies under 10 weeks. Now that they are getting teeth, the are eating that pretty well. It is very tiny pieces. I do not moisten the dry food.

yes they have teeth at 7 weeks, but not At 5. to be honest, it made my stomach sick to think that someone could do that. It makes me want to cry for her.

I see big problems down the road.

Im not sure why she was given to me so early and never realized that it would be taking away from her.

I wish you the best of luck with this tiny baby. Please don't let her outside on the ground. Not only is it too cold for a baby but she also has not had all of her shots to be outside.

thank you LaurenPatrice!We were wondering if we should or not! I have to admit he has been outside. We just moved our new neighbors have seven dogs who seem to be outside barking alot, so we let her do her biz and bring her in.
