Feeling Guilty :( Hi, I'm new to YT. I have a 12 week Yorkie/Maltese girl named Lola Sofia. She's very sweet and energetic. The only problem I'm having with her is that when I leave the apartment to go to College, she starts crying non-stop :( It breaks my heart. I'm gone 3 hours tops to college so its not like I leave her alone all day. When I'm back she's still crying and today I got a few complaints about this situation from my neighbors on my Facebook and it made me feel like such a bad mommy, which I know I'm not :( When I grab her her hearts is racing and she looks so sad. Help me with this! I've thought of taking her to college with me but I think that on the long run, it wont help her, she needs to learn to be alone sometimes. I know shes only been with me for a week, but I've became so attached to her, I dont want to see her so sad and I don't want my neighbors to keep complaining. |
Hello! Gizmo was like that when he was that young. Hes now almost 7 months old and hes much better. Why not buy a kong and put some peanut butter or kong fillers in it and freeze it? Gizmo loves it i do it for him once in a while when i know im going to be gone more than a few hours. By freezing the kong it takes the dog longer to get all the filler. Where do you leave your baby when you leave for school? I had Gizmo in his crate if i knew i was only going to be gone an hour or two. Now i keep him in an exercise pen with his crate, pee pad, food and toys and hes happy in there! Good luck your not a bad mommy. You baby is just missing you! |
The Kongs are great. Chew toys are too. They make chew antlers now and they last a long time. You could try leaving the TV on....I do that for my two. Sorry you're having problems. Could you wear her out before you leave so she sleeps the whole time you're gone? Also, pretend to leave a few times...then come back 5, 10, 20, 40 then 1 hr later so she gets the idea that you'll always come back. |
When I go out I leave the radio on for Sammy. I've heard other people do this too. Maybe it will help you. |
Thank you so much! I already tried leaving the TV on and it didn't work :(When I came today she wasn't crying because my roommate had left about 20 minunes before I came back, so she wasn't alone for that long. I'm going to try some of your tips, thanks again! :D |
My little one did that too My little guy (who is now a 13 months old) used to cry and bark at the beginning too when I went to university. He grew out of it, although he still doesn't love to be left alone and looks quite unhappy when I go. It breaks my heart every time, but I love the look on his face when I get home. I think you should let your neighbors know that you have a little puppy who is still getting used to being alone and that in time, the crying will stop. The kong is great, if the dog likes it. My little one likes nylabones. Good luck, it gets easier! (Being worried about being a bad mommy, automatically makes you not a bad mommy. A bad mommy wouldn't worry about it as much) |

Maybe one of your neighbors could come in and check on her or even babysit for you. |
I have a friend on the building and she offered to babysit Lola :) Again, thank you all for your advice and I'll be looking for some of the stuff you guys mentioned ;) |
