Yorkie Traveling 'to' cold weather, need advice
 

I think you will be fine if you have a good sweater or coat and maybe a pair of jammies or a warm hoodie for inside.

Sweaters will be enough. I live in Indiana and we get all kinds of cold snowy weather and mine dont have boots

I would put a jumper and a coat on the little guy because they really feel the cold as they have hair not fur xx:)

wipe off his feet good after being outside if they have salt or de icer down

Sweaters should be enough but if your going to be outside for very long with Gizmo a jacket would be nice too. I live in the NE part of Oklahoma and it gets pretty cold here during the winter. It was super cold yesterday and the farther north you go the colder it gets! I have a sweater on Fancy and put on her winter coat over that when we run errands. Yes, wipe his feet off good if there is any salt or anything put down to melt ice.

Hello! Don't stress...Yorkies were bred in COLD weather! Very hardy, like most dogs. He Yorkie's own coat will be fine. (As I write, my baby is sleeping on a carpet with a ball of yarn in his mouth, but....) remember! These pups are made for winter! It's just that you can't help but spoil them! Awwwww....baby will be fine.

This isn't completely true- as a single coated breed, yorkies DO get cold and do need to be protected from the elements- sure MOST of what we all buy- dresses, t- shirts, etc is about spoiling them- but putting on a sweater or coat when it is cold is about PROTECTING them and is very important.

I would bring a sweater, coat and maybe a sweatshirt. That way you have a choice of things depending on how cold it gets. Have a great trip!

If I was taking mine to MI and they were going to be doing business outside, I would be taking sweaters/hoodies, a coat and boots. My crew are used to Florida weather and have not even liked this last cold spell we have had. You might decide on the boots by how tough their pads are. Mine have pretty soft pads compared to my Jack Russell who runs and runs and builds tougher/thicker pads. Soft little pads will get cold quickly in snow.

I very much agree with what was said about no undercoat. The thick undercoats most dogs have protect them from cold. Without it, our yorkies are much more susceptible to the elements. Extremes of hot or cold can be a huge danger to yorkies.

They are like us in way too -- they can get used to the cold but if unaccustomed it will seem much worse to them. Mine HATE cold weather. But they can only "get used to" so much cold. Their little bodies do not generate a lot of heat to help warm them. Their bodies are usually close to the ground and that can mean some freezing bellies and privates! Watch the hair between the toes -- it can collect snow which melts, refreezes and can frostbite little toes/pads. Ears are susceptible to frostbite too.

I would ask alaskayorkie about what precautions they take with their yorkies in the snow and extreme temps. Theirs are used to the climate though so you may need to do more. I would always err on the side of caution when extremes of temps are involved!

We live in Canada where it is colder than MI and our guy can go outside to do his business without anything on however he makes it pretty quick. If we are going to be spending anytime outside or going in the car, etc we always put a jacket on him. If your dog likes to go for walks and you will need to do that when you're away you may want to consider booties because they're feet can't take too much cold. Unfortunately long walks for us in the winter consist mostly of the car to Petsmart and around the store because his feet just can't take too much of the cold and snow. Our labs however, can stay out in the cold and snow for hours.

I use paw pad protector on Razz's feet in the snowey months. Not if it is just a quick trip outside to pee etc, but if we are going for our daily walk. I also use a snow suit on him if we are going into the park where there is lots of snow, a sweater jacket if just city streets.

On very very cold days -15 -20 he gets his booties on for our walk. He hates his booties!

Inside our centrally heated house he wears no clothes. He doesn't get cold at all and we keep daytime temp about 65 degrees. At bed time I put a blankey under his crate, and another inside the crate, just to be sure he is warm.

I would bring sweaters and also fleece jackets of some sort. My guys seem to like their fleece jackets much better - they are lighter weight and warmer. Just like people, you can layer if it's really cold out.

As for booties - they are generally only needed if there is snow and ice on the ground (and especially if salt and snow melt has been dumped on the snow and ice). I use Neopaws (Dog Boots Shoe Neoprene Jackets Dog Sweaters NeoPaws) and they are GREAT! Not cheap, but are the best doggy boots I've been able to find.

I just ordered some more fleecies from this place - Gold Paw Series : Quality Dog Products. They are really nice. I have two already for my guys but needed a couple of extra. Not too expensive and really nice.
