Marauding Pit Bulls Attack Six I just read this article on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/11/06/pit....ap/index.html Marauding Pit Bulls Attack Six CARY, Illinois (AP) -- A 10-year-old boy was in critical condition Sunday after three pit bulls escaped from a home and went on a rampage, attacking six people before police shot and killed dogs, authorities said. No charges had been filed Sunday, but McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said it was being investigated as a crime scene. Neighbors said the attacks started late Saturday afternoon when children going door-to-door for a fund-raiser arrived at the home of Scott Sword, 41, who owned the dogs. "We had music playing, and I heard this bizarre sound," said Debby Rivera, who lives three houses away. "I looked out the window, and I saw a young boy. The dogs were just jumping on him." "The screams were horrible," she said. The dogs were "relentless, like they were possessed." The pit bulls attacked the two children, and when the dogs' owner tried to stop them, the dogs turned on him and bit off his thumb, Nygren said. The boy's father also tried to protect his son and was attacked. The dogs went after another neighbor as well. "The scene sprawled over a couple blocks; it was a very chaotic scene," said Lt. Michael Douglas of the Cary Fire Protection District. Residents threw rocks at the dogs and honked car horns to try to distract them from attacking before police arrived and shot the animals. Jim Malone said he and a neighbor tried to beat the dogs back with baseball bats. "He'd hit them, they'd run, and they'd come back," Malone said. "This went on for 15 minutes." The boy who was attacked, Nick Foley, was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday. His friend Jordan Lamarre, also 10, was in serious condition. Nick's father was listed in good condition. Sword and two others were treated for injuries and released. Last week, another 10-year-old boy in Colorado was mauled by a pack of pit bulls that attacked him in his own back yard. The boy was in critical condition after the attack, and the hospital said Sunday his family had requested no further information about his condition be released. The attack in the Denver suburb of Aurora came two days after the City Council banned pit bulls and other "fighting dogs." Owners who already had the dogs could keep them if they paid a $200 annual license fee. |
That is so sad! I dont like hearing that. You want to feel bad for the dogs to but what do you do in that kind of situation.?? Sad for all involved! |
Pit Bulls..hhmmmmm... I too feel bad for Pit bulls....I know they can be nice but there has to be something inside them that snaps...wish someone could figure it out....those poor kids..the fear that they are going to have for the rest of their lives...the pain and trauma....I just don't know how to feel about the Breed of Pit Bulls  It would be interesting to find out more about the owners and what they have to say.... |

That is horrible! I just can't figure that breed out...I know people who own them and they are so sweet and people oriented. Maybe the father was training them to fight....or maybe their inherited fighting instincts escalates in a "pack" mentality. God...and here we are worried about the "irresponsible" breeding of our Yorkie breed...I'll take a " 2lb yorkie with a liver shunt.. ..over a killer dog any day! Francie |
Its funny to me how its always pitbulls being publicized by the Media...All pitbulls are NOT KILLERS...THEY ARE NOT A KILLER BREED...I have one in my household and he is FARRRRRRR beyond killer... Fatal attacks since 1975 have been attributed to over 30 different dog breeds yet all the media can talk about are Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, or Akitas. Size alone is not an accurate indicator of which dogs are capable of killing and which dogs are not. In October of 2000, a baby was killed by the families Pomeranian dog in California. The average weight of a Pomeranian being only 4 pounds, and in February of 2002, a Jack Russell Terrier mauled a 6 week old baby in Tennessee. Just like ANY OTHER BREED...If you TAKE THE TIME to teach the dog right and wrong these things will not happen...I saw a yorkie in New Hope the other day that went after a golden retreiver for no reason AT ALL..Does this mean the dog is a killer? I am sure if the yorkie went at this largers dogs neck and bit the right spots he could have killed him... |
How sad, not all people treat their pets like family. If they did, we wouldn't hear these stories so much. The pets that do this, are the same ones who live out side, with no attention all day. :thumbdown |
Its all over the news here; Cary is a wannabe suburb of Chicago. The dogs look like Rottweiler/Shepherd mixes to me. |
Oh and we have legislation in the works now in Illinois to help stop violence and dog fighting; the penalties for such acts are going to be Class A felonies. If anyone wants information about it, they can PM me. |
I always hate to hear that someone has been killed or injured by a large dog. I have seen docile dogs of the breeds listed as most dangerous. I have a rotty that is the biggest baby, but we always watch him closely or put him in some kind of confined area when there are children here. My nephew has had three yellow labs and all three had to be put down because they were mean and would bite. He raised them with his own children and they had lots of attention. (figure that out) I think part of the problem with any dogs is when two or more get together, they kind of get in a frenzie and when one attacks they all do.jmo |
Those poor children. :( |
This is why I dont trust Pit bulls I dont care how doctile someone says they are. It said they even bit off the thumb of the owner so he had no control over them. |
I blame the owner. |
I blame the owner also but their is a tendancy for these type of dogs to bite or attack. I dont know why someone would want to put themselves through the potential liability in owning them. |
I think it's terrible that pitbulls get such a bad reputation. I suppose due to their size (and other breeds equally big), it's more of a tragedy when they attack people. Dogs of all sizes can snap and start attacking but can you imagine a little yorkie attacking and biting you? You laugh and throw them off and pet their cute little heads. Certainly can't do that to a pit bull huh? Anyhow, my pitbull is so sweet... it's so sad how people look at her suspiciously sometimes when she's just walking around minding her own business. |
OMG! What a horrible scenario. Those poor children will be traumatized for the rest of their lives. Most of all I hope they emerge from this critical condition. I just can't imagine. |
