When do yorkies stop growing? Gizmo is currently 3.2 pounds and almost 7 months old. I am hoping he will gain at least another pound or two but i know that is asking for a lot! His legs are just so delicate i worry about him! Im a nervous reck walking with him i am so afraid of stepping on him. Gizmo tried nipping at another dog today while on our walk. How do i correct this? He still has a few baby teeth so i know hes still teething but thats no excuse. Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season!! :) Love, Christina & Gizmo:aimeeyork |
It's hard to predict, especially with the little guys. A quarter pound is a big increase. Dink is 10 months old tomorrow. He was 3.4 all summer. In fact, I know he still weighed that in October because he was weighed when he was neutered in October. I was pretty sure that he would not make 4 lbs.,but we weighed him this week and he was 3.12! I don't know if it's the change from puppy chow to the new food or just his growth pattern. He's nice and sturdy, and I can still carry him with one hand. :aimeeyork |
Depends on genes. Different Yorkie lines mature at different rates; some are full grown early and others take longer. My boys, full brothers, had growth spurts at 10 months of age and gained a full pound. They are larger -- 7 and 8 pounds. Many Yorkies continue to fill out and add a few ounces in their second year. |
Bella added a pound to her weight during her second year. She is now 4 lbs. strong, healthy, and doesn't seem fragile. I know what you mean about the legs. I feel so much better now that she has added a pound. We walk her quite a bit and I think that has helped to strengthen her legs, too! |

Most will continue to grow up to a year old. But some will still mature beyond that -- fill out more and gain in weight although not necessarily in size. Ben is 4 years old and was just recently neutered. He gained a 1/2 pound in the first 2 weeks after surgery and I think maybe a little more since. But he is still basically the same size, just a little heftier. Dogs do vary a great deal in how they grow just as people do. Some have spurts later in life, some stop growing earlier. That is why the growth charts are just estimates. Finished size is one of the nice little surprises our yorkies have for us. :) Speaking of charts (http://yorkiepassion.com/growthchart.htm) this one has a 26 week old weight of 53 ounces coming in as a 4 pound 18 month old. That is close to your situation so I think you can expect a little more growth but maybe not quite as much as you were thinking about. |

up to 18 mo old |
Jackson did not stop growing until almost 1 1/2 years old. He stayed at 12lbs from 6 months-a little over a year. He is now 15lbs at a little over 2yrs old and has maintained that weight. |
Zach was 3 1/2 lbs at 16 weeks. When we took him to the vet 2 weeks ago he was 6 lbs. He's tall and thin. |

I think I'm doing my decimals wrong. He is 3 lbs, 12 ounces now. so maybe I should be saying 3.75. |

And yes, it would be 3.75 pounds so that is pretty close 4 pounds. A nice size for a yorkie. |

I'm sorry. I've been unclear. He has gained. gone from 3.25 to 2.75. We weigh him on a postal scale that gives pounds plus ounces. Sorry for the confusion. And thanks, I do like his size... but something tells me if he continues to gain and makes 4 or 5 lbs. that I'll think he's still the perfect size. |
Sandy's 2.2lbs when we first brought him home. He was 2 days to 12 weeks old. Now, he's now almost 16 months old and is 3.75lbs. We're quite sure he isn't going to grow bigger because he's been a 3.75lbs for months. |
Thank everyone for your posts! Dinkyweil, Smallmans, and Noisinka, How much do your dogs eat? and what do they eat? Gizmo is eating a mixture of Royal Canin puppy 33 and Wellness puppy about 1/4 a cup a day. I dont think that is enough but he won't eat anymore than that. I have tried adding some canned food to his diet but he gets tired of it after a few days. I just want to make sure he is eating enough to grow. Thanks all! Christina :aimeeyork |
