disapointing On animal planet right now on Dogs101 they are doing a show on designer dogs and the benefits of mixing these dogs. Check it out |
I guess the programming is diff here, we have a dog's life on. what are they saying about the benefits? and who is saying it? ie a DVM a geneticist? anyone with any degree of education? |
No it is vets telling the benefits. They have went into genetically engineering the dogs to be hypoallergentic or be a good swimmer or basically mixing two dogs to get the traits you desire. They also said since they are mixed they have vigor. Then they tell what celebrities have that type of mix. |
Hmmmm....want a hypoallergenic dog, good swimmer, with LOTS of vigor? Get a yorkie -- a purebred 100% yorkie! |

Or a Westie! In truth though, the likely hood of problems must be lower for mixed animals because the pet insurance companies charge less for mixed breeds. If they didn't have less (number or amount) of claims, they wouldn't charge less. So there must be something..... That said, my purposely bred "designer doggie" is my least healthy pup. |
LOL they just said the chorkie can be hard to housebreak thats the yorkie in them |
Well, I happen to love my "designer" dog. Some people, like myself, don't want a purebred Yorkie. I wanted a Shorkie and am part of this forum bc she's still a Yorkie and it's rather insulting that people on this forum rather frequently feel the need to bash on these adorable puppies. |
My best friend has a chi-weenie and she is the worst she has allergies and bad hips she sheds like crazy we have spent over $500 and antibotics alone this year really of all the dogs in my family my grandmothers sheltie is the healthiest my moms pug lost an eye her chi has to have nerve pills. Gatsby is anemic my best friends Maltese had LP,cataracts, arthritis and bad skin problems. |

I absolutely love and adore my Shorkie as well. I wouldn't trade her for anything but that doesn't mean that people should purposely mix dog breeds and charge lots of money by labeling it a "designer dog." |
Programming must be different - we have Cats 101. |

I love mixed breeds... you can find millions of them in shelters around the world every day. Why purposely breed them? Btw, I really dislike the whole Dogs 101 show anyways. They always have a bunch of their facts wrong. And half the stories they do don't even look like the breed of dog. The Papillon episode featured a dog that looked all Pomeranian to me, and the Silky Terrier looked like a Schnauzer. It's so odd... .you'd think when talking about a purebred, you'd want to show them how they are supposed to act/look. |
Amen to that! |

I seen the one about the cats 101 yesterday, I must have missed the one your talking about. I was flipping through the channels all day |
Genetics, Yorkies didn't just naturally evolve neither did miniature schnauzers, I have one of each and a Schnorkie To lend my response to why purposely breed them...hmmmm it's the purposeful and intentional controlled, recorded and planned crossing that are supposed to qualify as "designer dogs" the term hybrid and designer vary in a hybrid is a 50/50 a designer is supposed to be a 75/25 I have a Schnorkie (his DNA results actually list him as being 62% schnauzer and 37% Yorkie with a 1% variation unknown) he's a freakish result of hybridization-he's 21 lbs (the growth inhibiting gene can get "shut off" i.e. Ligers etc) has a quadruple color coat that is the result of a salt and pepper mini schauzie and black and silver yorkie, he has the body of a deer and a tiny head that makes him clumsy and awkward-he's as stubborn as a schnauzie and as spaztic as a Yorkie- I think he's perfect! Of course I'm impartial-I'm sorry but the picking on hybrids or "designer dogs" isn't nice...how do you think Yorkies came to be? Miniature Schnauzers also...they were all "created breeds...having said that, the whole designer market is a joke though at this point (Canadian Schnorkie breeders are known as the best by standard FYI) and especially from my experience being in California the vast majority of those whom breed "designer dogs" are puppy millers-does anyone really think they are tracking genetics at all-it's sad but true and the fact is you never know what the result of the offspring will be until you get into F-3 and F-3 crossed of hybrid which can have consistently produced pups, however there are many proven genetic benefits in the F-3 production pups, weeding out certain breed inherent defects, crossing breeds to counteract genetic defects and weaknesses etc. (Google it if you want a genetics lesson in hybrids) Designer Dogs, Hybrid Dogs, Designer Dog, Hybrid Dog this site just explains f-3,so the reality is there is a lot of "waste" pups. In fact my Scoobers was a rescue he was dumped outside a pound in a bag with another "funky" looking designer dog-the pound gets tons of "designer dogs" dumped there all microchipped to "breeder" whom never respond to contact requests-and there is little to nothing that can be done about it. The whole designer breed market (it is literally that a market...a sick one too) here is a mockery to the original ideal of it...then again saying weather the ideal was from accidental crossings or from intentional manipulations at this point is really saying which came first the chicken or the egg? Well there's my whole dime on the topic...wait and since I anticipate ppl not liking what I said I'll add another two cents...I really dislike Chiweenies...really a miniature badger killer and a spaztic vicious lil dog no one knows how it came to be..then again I don't especially like Doxies or Chihuahuas...I know I'm a Chiweenie racist. |
I love my Morkies and I did buy them from a Morkie Breeder. My vet even said that mixing them usually does rule out genetic problems. Mine are the so healthy and have been since I got them. |
The AKC has on one occasion accepted a genuine "designer dog hybrid" American Kennel Club - Chesapeake Bay Retriever |
If people want mixes they should go to a shelter and adopt one since so many are euthanized. I dont think mixes should be bred. Thats not me picking on mixes its my opinion and Im sticking to it. There is such a thing as responsible pet buying. And if your going to say there are purebreds like yorkies are in shelters I agree and say they are overbred and 2 wrongs dont make a right. If only responsible reputable breeders were breeding there would be alot less dogs in shelters. Designer dog breeders arent reputable breeders. They arent breeding for a standard or health just supplying puppies for the latest craze |
