Long time no post, but Bailee is sick and need advice!
 

Hi Guys, I hope everyone has been well. Between school and other commitments, have barely had time to breath, much less post so sorry!

Well, Bailee is sick and I am freaking out a little so this is the place I thought of...
She has always thrown up yellow bile about once or twice a week due to the fact she was hungry and needed to eat. ( I free feed but she just doens't east sometimes.) About a week ago, this started becoming more frequent like 2 or 3 times a day and in the night. The vet said she could just be producing too much bile and to start giving her 2.5 mg of pepcid AC daily. I started this two days ago and it seemed to have taken care of the yellow bile problem,but now she is throwing up her food! She has done this twice today and it is worrying me to death. It is a mix of food and saliva/foam type stuff. Any advice would be helpful!

You should probably ask admin to move this to Sick/Emergencies where it won't get buried so fast.

Did your vet do bloodwork? Where the results normal? I would be very, very concerned too.

I thought about putting it there but I was thinking more people would be in general...I just may ask them to move it though!
No bloodwork was done, they said the bile was fairly common and should clear up with the Pepcid AC but it isn't.
I was doing some online research and does anyone happen to know how long dry dog food is good for? I normally buy 5lbs bags of NB duck and potato. However the last time I went, there were ony 28 lbs and it takes Bailee foreverrrrr to eat that much. I have it stored in a container and not the original bag so do you think that may have gone bad? I have had it several months...in any case I am purchasing some fresh tomorrow...

Dry kibble only keeps for 4-6 weeks. It shouldn't spoil, though. It just loses its nutritional value.

How old is Bailee?

Yorkies will vomit for any number of reasons.

Check her food... smell it... dog food can go rancid or get moldy so check the color and the odor.

Sometimes dogs can have an overgrowth of bad bacteria in their systems, (shows up on a fecal exam), that will make them sick.

Toxins can make them vomit.

Viruses can cause vomiting. Usually supportive care is provided and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections until the virus runs it's course.

Is she pooping normally? If not, she may have eaten something not digestible and could have a blockage. Her tummy may be hard and bloated. An Xray could rule this out.

She may be developing an allergy to her food. The easiest way to figure this out is to change her food to a different type of protein and see if it helps. If not, then you vet will have to run some tests.

Has she been dewormed? Parasites can also cause vomiting.

Pancreatitis can cause vomiting. Has she eaten anything other than her own dog food? Some people food is too rich for the pups and Yorkies have a tendency to develop pancreatitis anyway. Is she painful in her abdomen and/or along her spine just forward of the hips?

If none of this helps, and this turns out to be a chronic condition, then a biopsy of her stomach and/or intestines may be done.

It won't hurt to put her on a bland diet of chicken and rice... I do this anytime mine get sick, for a few days till they calm down.

I would have testing done very soon, you don't want to let this go one for too long without determining the cause.

checked the food, it doesn't smell great but then again it is dog food, however it doesnt have a rancid smell

she is popping normally as I was scared about a blockage as well

she is dewormed and up to date on all vaccines
as for the other things I guess I will have to see what the vet says...she is acting fine running aorund the room right now as a matter of fact...it just concerns me with this much vomiting...

Mine usually pick up some kind of bug from the yard seems like whenever the seasons change, they'd end up with diarrhea mostly but sometimes would vomit. This happened so often every 3 months it seemed, I asked the vet and put them on probiotics all the time now, which has helped keep their tummies under control for almost a year now.

You'll probably need to have bloodwork and a fecal done, and see what the vet says after the exam. I would expect the vet to be a bit more aggressive about this at her next appointment.

Vaccines work against some illnesses, but there are still many things that we don't/can't vaccinate against, that can cause illness in dogs. Was she around any other dogs lately?

nope just our other dog, a border collie. Hopefully this will clear up, if she vomits one more time then it is back to the vet we go...poor thing :(

Also, when a dog vomits, you should pull the food and water for about 4-6 hours, and when you reintroduce it, only give small amounts every 15-20 minutes or so. It gives them a better chance of keeping it down. Start with water in small amounts, then after an hour or two and no vomiting, try her with a little bit of food. If she vomits again, remove the food and water again for 4-6 hours.

Chicken and rice (plain white rice) is bland and would be good to feed her. Or you can use Gerber's Stages Stage 2 Chicken Baby food. Meat only, none of the fancier dinners or anything like that, until her issues are resolved.

Your vet may opt to give her an injection to stop the vomiting, dependent on what he discovers when he sees her next.

I will try the food thing and she lovesssss chicken (hates rice, spoiled thing :rolleyes:)

Anti-acids work the same way in humans as dog etc...they only band aid an issue and do not CURE it...try a teaspoon of (mother's)APPLE CIDER VINEGAR in water-or in some dog safe liquid (like flavored water to change the taste). I love the ones from thebellacottage.com they are gorgeous and they are more than reasonably priced-cheaper than I've seen any basic one in any pet store. have you ever considered a water bottle instead of a water bowl? Miniature Schnauzer's are extremely refluxy and have to use a raised feeder, also they have beard issues and are recommended to use a water bottle to keep their face dry-well I found using a water bottle also aided in reflux issues.4" White Pet Feeder - The Bella Cottage

Dear Bailee's mom, please let us know how she is doing tomorrow. If you do not see the end to this vomiting by tomorrow evening (Saturday evening) get her back to the vet. Make sure she does not dehydrate. It sounds like everyone is giving you great advice and many of us check in often on issues where a yorkie is sick so we will watch to make sure we support you until Bailee is well.
