Collar help... So I am picking up Ziva tomorrow! (yay) and I wanna get her a cute collar to wear everyday. I already have a harness for her from a previous pup I had for walking. Show me yours and where u got it! She will be 17ish weeks so what size is a good size to get? Should I just take her somewhere tomorrow to pick one out? I still wanna see your collars and where u got em! |
One of the problems with the really cute designer collars is there is no way it could be comfortable to have on all the time. I get the lil pals ones from petsmart or petco. I make sure it is not to wide and that it is soft. |
I'm a collar fanatic! Trust me, you will have more than one, LOL. I like etsy.com... it's people who personally make collars, so they are one of a kind and really well made. Ebay, you can also find a lot. Of course Petsmart and Petco offer some decent ones, but they're not my favorites. As for harnesses, Jackson has 3 Puppia's and 2 from YT user chattiesmom. :) |
I found one on etsy I really love... Prairie Winter Collar by CreatureCollars on Etsy or this one: 3/4in Petite Quick Release Collar Cupcake by fairytailcollars I love cupcakes but purple is my fav color lol etsy is dangerous! haha.. Brister... I can see I am going to have tons.. |
Oooo! I just checked out the etsy.com site. I am in love. Thanks for letting me know about it Brit. ;) |
be careful if she has a collar when you are not around they can get caught on stuff and it can kill them |
We use cat break away collars for the girls indoors. Outdoors, we use dog break away collars. We always walk using (Lupine) harnesses. |

1 Attachment(s) Glad to hear you are using a harness to walk with and not a collar-but I'm a downer on the convo., despite the obvious strangulation by a collar and the thought of using a break away, I just wanted to add that long haired dogs can get irritated with anything that stays on their fur too long-like a collar so maybe a short cut on the neck (like almost shaved) or not wearing a collar for long periods is best, especially if not supervised. I use "bling harnesses" because so many collars are so cute and I don't use them because of my dogs all being rather long haired...here's a pic of my "bling harness" though. These are totally generic and you can get them at any pet boutique (preferably not a big box one-ye I'm one of those too):). As you can see Elvis got all excited when Mommy brought out his "blingy" he thought we were going out somewhere and when I didn't put it on him he started nosing it! |
Collars aren't an issue if the daily brushing routine is kept up. I have yet to find one matt on Kaji's neck hair, and he wears collars 24/7. I brush him in the morning and at night, which is a must anyway in my book. I do however sometimes struggle with harnesses. I use them of course, but the wrong kind chaffe my little man's belly and arm pitts and matt up his belly hair real bad. :( |
Where are you finding the breakaway collars? Does petsmart carry them? I worry the cat ones won't be strong enough. |
I don't like how those look, so I never bothered with those. WINTER PLAID / RED ~ Breakaway SAFETY CAT Collar - eBay (item 230561634114 end time Dec-16-10 12:35:22 PST) I have one like this one. They're pretty strong and hold up well, but they will fall apart with a swift tug. I'd say they're stronger than the ones you'll find at petsmart. |

The cat ones do come off easier so those are only for inside, when unsupervised. |
Our Ziva has a new collar (and Harness) from Chattie's mom, I can see the hair around her neck growing in already! the silk Cindy uses doesn't catch like the webbing on other collars. Ziva needs to wear a collar with a bell, its the only way we can keep track of her. |
