My baby 4 months old & 3lbs ready for grooming? I made an appointment next week at Central Park Pet Spa for my Gizmo. He is 3 lbs and 4 months. Im scared because its our first time and I dont know if he is ready for it. The place has a very good review but can't decide if I should go on with it. Im a very over protective mother of 16yr old daughter and I am too with my baby boy Gizmo. Should I wait until he is 6 months old? His hair is growing a lot and tangled at some parts. I don't know and scared to groomed at home. Please need advise. Thank you. |

If there are too many tangles then the groomer may have to resort to clipping him really short. Have you been brushing him, washing him, and clipping his nails? It is best if you have cause then he is used to being groomed. But to answer your question 4mths is not too early to bring to a good groomer. |
i have been presto to a groomer since he was 4 months as well. his groomer mainly shampoo'd him, trimmed his nails and the hair around the front and back to prevent from getting dirty. a good groomer won't usually cut the hair fully until about 6 months. hope this helps |
I am overprotective also. I also do not want my babies to be in their kennel for hours waiting to be groomed. ....So, when I make my appt, I make sure the groomer can get right to them and I wait. My babies are handed off to her and she takes them right back and grooms and then we switch and I give her another one. I usually watch so the pups cannot see me (they get anxious when they see me) and shop a little. I talked to the groomer before I ever started taking them and she fully understands what I want. Don't be afraid to ask and make sure the groomer knows what you want done. |
If your really that uncomfortable search craigslist or look in your yellow pages and find a groomer that comes to your home or a mobile groomer that does it right in your driveway.. I had a groomer come to my house the first couple of times I had Laci groomed.. |
Puppies shouldn't go to grooming salons, dog parks, pet stores, etc. until they have finished all their vaccinations plus two weeks for full immunity. If Gizmo has completed his vaccinations, it should be safe to take him. Start small, though, so it is a positive experience. Many people bathe puppies at home, then take them to the groomer's in the beginning. Try to work out the tangles yourself with a little Cowboy Magic and a comb. Then you can just have the groomer trim his paws, do a sanitary cut and maybe trim his face if Gizmo will tolerate it. Less is more when it comes to those first grooming experiences. A bad experience early on can traumatize him and make him difficult to groom from then on. |
I started mine out at the groomer as soon as they were done with their vaccines- at the beginning they didn't get a full grooming but I thought it was good for them to get used to it- she would bathe them, brush them, clip their nails and do a sanitary cut, etc. However, I did find a groomer that let me stay at the beginning until I finally felt comfortable leaving them. After awhile I found they behaved better when they couldn't see me and by then I had built a trust with the groomer so I knew she was going to treat them well. I still only drop them off for a few hours, they get groomed and come home as soon as they are done. She has to do both my dogs and she usually only has them about 2.5 hours or so. |
Thank you all for your reply I think I should wait until she is 6 months old. I do give him a bath but I think that caused the tangled. His tangles are on his tummy and chin. he does not like me to comb his hair on these parts. I have tried to get some tangles out and its working well. Need more time and patience though. I am very uncomfortable and that is why I made up my mind and I will wait. I will cancel his appointment and re-schedule for Jan 2011. He will be 6 months then. He's done with his shots 2 wks ago and the vet cut his nails. Thank you again :) |
Hi I was just searching "Central Park Pet Spa" and came across this thread. Denghee did you end up taking Gizmo to Central Park Pet Spa to be groomed? How did it go? I just made Teddy an appointment but I am very nervous as this will be his first appointment. Did they cut him really short? I am nervous they are going to cut Teddy too short. |
Based on the pictures on my album would Ya'll say that Marley is ready for a light grooming? She'll be 6 months in another week. Her coat is very coarse and cotteny and tangles easily. |
