I am proud mommy to a 2.5 year old yorkie named Rhia. She's 6.8 lbs of love and cuddles. She's pretty excitable and loves going for her walks and playing. We live in a 700 sqft. apartment and it's been great so far. However, I work a couple days a week and I've been pondering adopting a cat to be Rhia's buddy. I think I might have found the right one today. It's a five year old male cat named Bernie. He's fluffy and weighs about 16 lbs, and will be going on a diet ASAP if he comes home with me. I've been looking for a cat for a while and I think Bernie may be it. He was very mellow and a tad playful, but never drew his claws when playing with my hand. He was incredibly gentle and I liked that. He is used to living in an apartment too. He hasn't lived with a dog or cat before, but didn't seem phased at all by any of the sounds or noises at the shelter and wasn't aggressive when other cats were close to his cage.
So, I'm writing this because I'd like advice. I'm going to think things through and if I decide to adopt him, it'll be mid next week. I know I have to be slow about introducing them. Rhia has been around my parents cats who despise her. She gets very excited and wants to play. I can definitely see these two playing, but also cuddling for long naps together which my doggy loves to do. Any advice on introducing an excitable yorkie to an older, mellow cat? |
