Bathing yorkies Our yorkie stinks, we brought her to the vet and she said that the bath should be once a month only because Dogs have glands that secrete oil into their hairs, and when you bathe them often it dries and stinks. But we can't help it, any tips??:animal36:animal-pa |
I guess we're having the same issue. The first day of bath, smells great, second day she is beginnging to get oily looking. Third day she looks oily and smells like wet dog. She has skin issues and was given aloe & oatmeal shampoo by her Vet but that really makes it worse, she smells on second day and soooo oily. I have used Dawn as someone recommended but it is not helping. How on earth do some of you bathe only once a month or every couple weeks. We waited 5 days last bath and I told hubby she was like that Charlie Brown character, ? Pigpen, the one who has a stinky dust cloud around him all the time, lol. Anyone else experienced this problem and solved it, I would love to bath her at least every two weeks or less. I'm afraid I'm going to mess with her PH balance by bathing so much. |
Could it have something with what you're feeding them? I bathe Rio and Bullet about once a week, sometimes even a little sooner. Not because they stink bad though, but because their facial hair gets crusty from food, saliva etc. They never smell like dog, they smell good in their own way. |
My dogs are bathed once a week and none of them have dry skin issues nor stink because of this. lol...if I bathed them only once a month - they would stink for certain! |

This is gonna sound nuts, but I've gotten to where I bathe mine rarely. And I do mean rarely. They go to the groomers every 6-8 wks and most of the time I do not bathe them in between. They always smell sweet. All of them. All of my animals clean each others faces/eyes so that is not an issue, but a warm damp wash cloth daily would keep their face and beard pretty clean. It works for us and since then, they itch less and I don't worry about messing up their ph. They really are always kissably, cuddly sweet smelling. |

I bath Zhoie every weekend since she came home and she will be 2 in January. No skin problems, ph and she just never smells like a dog even. Maybe it's the products you use. I use Cris Chistensen or Iv San Bernard and love both products. They offer a lot of treatment option with their products too. |
If you use a quality shampoo and conditioner, you can bathe them once a week without drying out their skin. I actually bathe mine about every 10-14 days. If you wait a whole month to bathe them, you are probably going to have some nasty eye gunk build-up. They make ncie little pads to wipe the corners of their eyes with -- they work well for in between baths. You cna also just use a warm wet washcloth. If you are worried about dry skin, I can recommend a great product -- Espree Luxury Remoisturizer. Use it after the shampoo just as any other condiitoner. I love Espree products. The Silky Show Shampoo or the Hypoallergenic Coconut Shampoo are my favorites. They also have an Oatmeal shampoo that many like. I use Fluffy Puppy Shampoo and Conditioner (Biogroom) for all the pups and continue to use it on adult faces. The no-tear formula is great for squirmy ones in case they get some in their eyes and it leaves them smelling great! I use Minksheen shampoo most of the time on adult dogs. It has natural insect repellants, natural antibacterial, and coat conditioners. It leaves them with the best shine too! But I like to occasionally rotate the Espree products in for the smell and a little variety. |
I used to bath Sandy once a week. I do it once in 2 weeks now. We walk him twice a day. In the morning, I'll clean his eyes. In the evening after our last walk, I will clean his belly, paws and face. In between his baths, I'll spray his coat with Bio-Groom Mink Oil. |
I bath mine once a week. They both have long hair and if I wait any longer they will both look and smell like hell. One and a half year now I have absolutely no skin problems. I think that you have to find a good shampoo and a good conditioner Maria |
I bath mine every weekend also, unless they get incredibly dirty. Good Morning America had a vet on not long ago and he suggested once a week for indoor dogs. |
Mine get a bath every week. They also go to the groomer once a month for a bath and to have nails clipped if needed. Two of mine are in really shot short cut's because they have the type of coat that is cotton. Now my newest rescue she has long silky hair. I brush her at leat twice a day. All eye boogies and faces are washed evey morning. I use two different kinds of shampoo, I switch them out. PetSilk and Milk Sheen. I also use the spray leave in conditioner for brushing out as well. |
i bathe mine once a week. If I don't they start to scratch really bad. Charlie has always had to have a bath once a week or he starts to look oily, nasty and stinky. He has always had dry skin. I got some shampoo and conditioner for dry skin at Pet Depot and it has worked well. |
I also bathe every 5-7 days... she sleeps in the bed with us and she "play" fights with the other dogs... |
