Collars ...confused I'm new to owning a puppy ..George will be 5 months on the 9th of Dec and he has never had a collar ,I use a harness when he's on lease. My question is can I put a collar on him or is that to hard on his neck ,been reading this forum alot and realize about the trachea. Love this place so much info for newbies like me ....:) |
I use the harness to walk my babies also, but I do have collars for their identification (only). Just in case they get out by mistake, someone will be able to identify them fast and easy. This will not hurt your babies neck, as long as it is not used for walking. Would love to see pictures of George. |

The only collars I trust are the breakaway ones. I had one on my cat that goes outdoors and it obviously got caught on something and broke open because one day she didnt have it on anymore so they do what they are supposed to |
I use a collar but it only has an identification tag on it. I use a harness if I use a leash. |
I keep a collar on Jackson 24/7 with his ID tags and use a harness for walking. |
I would put a collar on him just to hold his tags but never use it to hook the leash to. |
On the recommendation of others we used a harness for a while but Troy isn't a fan of them and he'll wiggle right through them. So on walks I use a collar since I don't want him wiggling away. I use breakaway collars and a flexi leash so there's no tension around his neck. |
thats a Great Question!! Im new to the yorkie world and we haven't even got him a collar yet, but I'm going to get him a harnest for walking as you all have said and a collar for idenification. I just also felt that i couldn't imagen having to "correct" my Thomas when their necks are so small you'd be affaird of breakin it in two's lol all the best on your pupp!! |
I have a collar on both Couver and Khloe because I am deathly afraid that one day they will get out and I want to do anything and everything in my power to ensure that they will get back to me. They are also both microchipped. |

Collars-my dogs no likey-I can see why a dog who is used to them and is used to a collar would maybe prefer them (for tags or general wearing-not walking)- again if your dog is getting out of a harness either you have a Houdini or your harness isn't on or fitted correctly. I put the ID tags on the harness (the metal ring where the leash attaches). I see why some people use a collar for the tags and walk with a harness but it seems that means they wear collar a lot and with long haired dogs a collar can be irritating. Some people swear by them though saying they are just like a necklace-but I'm still leery of them for irritation of skin and hair, choking hazards etc-I wonder the point of a break away one too, if it gets caught yes it breaks away they don't choke but don't they come off rather easily then too? My harnesses go on every time they out to potty in the back yard even, we walk, or whenever we go out the house. It comes down to whatever works for you-if I did use a collar I would be only using a break away one...and I'd really make sure it wasn't on for extended periods of time. |
I am making my own harnest collar. but i guess not everyone is crafty! |
