Max is home He's finally here, the novelty is wearing off... and now the hard work begins. He mouths us constantly -it doesn't hurt, but I'm trying to stop it now before his teeth get sharp enough to hurt and is constantly trying to crawl over and onto us. Don't know where to begin with housetraining: is 8 weeks too young to begin? |
Your new puppy is crawling on you and mouthing you because that is what puppies do. Ideally, small breed dogs are kept with their mothers and littermates between 8 -12 weeks of age to learn important social skills, and beginner bite inhibition and potty training. Puppies want a lot of touch, so he is going to do a lot of crawling on you. Start potty training now, but keep in mind that it will likely be a long road to success. I advocate indoor piddle pad training first for many reasons, but many prefer outdoor training only. Be sure to give your little one ample opportunity to potty, as in once every hour to start. They can go longer overnight depending on the pup. Be sure to praise every successful potty. |
