How do you keep their hair from matting? Since it's getting colder out we have to keep Bailey in sweaters and shirts, but he is getting little mattes all over and it breaks my heart because it hurts to get them out. what do you guys do to keep their hair from matting when wearing clothes? |
i dont know if you can keep it from matting really. when i put my harley's clothes on him i try to fix his hair after i get him dressed and brush him more regularly. the longer he has the garment on the more matted he gets if i don't brush him. i find it helps if i brush his hair from the tips and work my way down to the roots while holding the section of hair at the root so it doesn't pull his skin. :) |
I have the same problem with Pixie and wearing a sweater. I just take it off and hold the matted hair in one hand so it doesn't pull on the skin and use a brush or a wire brush and comb. It seems to work. |

I keep Nolee's hair cut in a schnauzer cut with shirt and puppy cut in the face. It is really easy to keep up! |
It IS a problem My girl has a cottony coat and boy am I struggling now. :( I feel so bad for her, because of the problems getting the matts out. I spray her with a detangler and it helps a bit but no matter how careful you are, it seems it still pulls on their skin. I would like to really shorten her hair but I do worry about it being too chilly for that. I brush her out every morning before "we" go to work, but she is immediately in a harness and sometimes a sweater or coat and the matts begin immediately. |
I've just taken to brushing Lulu out at least twice a day when she is wearing sweaters. She matts fairly easily. I do use Yorkie Sheen before brushing and it seems to help. I brush Lulu each morning before putting her sweater on (usually she wears pjs to bed, so I take them off & then brush her out before putting anything else on her). Then I brush her again before putting her pjs on for bed This has helped tremendously. She still gets some tangles but they are so much easier to get out. |
Wire slicker brush works best for me. Have to keep the hair clean too. |
If you can find satin or silk lined clothing that will help somewhat with matting after they wear clothes or sweaters. Always brush out right after taking off any clothing. You can use a little cornstarch sprinkled on mats to help them comb out easily...it really works, just use it before you get the coat wet with detangling spray. |
