Double the Trouble, Double the Fun!! We're going to get to be a "two dog family" soon! :) My husband has always said that he wants to have two dogs but that we had wait until after we'd bought a house so he could have a big dog (i.e. boxer, great dane, german shepherd, etc). I've never really wanted a big dog (especially in the house) and after falling in love with our first Yorkie, Chloe, I just can't imagine ever wanting any other breed of dog. But I'd kind of quit harping on it because I didn't want to drive him nuts. Well, a few nights ago he suddenly decided that waiting two or three years to have a second dog was just too long! So we are now planning on getting another little girl sometime after winter ends. (I don't want to be trying to potty train a puppy in the snow!) But now I need to pick a name!!! And it's hard, so I figure starting months in advance is a good idea. :D Ideally, I'd like to have something that matches well with Chloe but we decided that Zoe might sound too similar and be confusing for the two dogs. We prefer short names or long names that shorten well. (Even Chloe gets called 'Chlo' more often than not!) I've thought about Penny (Chloe is short for Clover and pennies & clover are good luck), Sophie, Sadie, Lucy & Molly but so far nothing has just grabbed me. I'm hoping to narrow it down to two or three options and then when we meet the new addition, one of the names will just mesh. Any ideas, YT??? Also, any suggestions for introducing them would be appreciated. This will be the first time I've ever had two inside dogs at the same time, though my husband grew up that way. Chloe will be two years old in March, she's been spayed, and she plays pretty well with her schnauzer 'cousin' after an hour or so of getting used to her. Any other advice you guys can think of is more than welcome also!! I know we've got a while, but I like to be super prepared! -C |
Congrats on getting another furbaby. I'm sure once you see her a name will just pop out at you! |

Congrats on your new baby! So exciting to be getting more! I already have 4 and wish I could get more! lol! We love magic, so our names have something to do with it: Abbie (short for abbracadabra) , Tinkie (for Tinkerbell), Houdina, and only boy, Merlin! :) |
Aw..congrats. how about kari. Chloe and kari. It sounds good togther : ) and I read somewhere that dogs answer better to a name ending in the e sound. Good luck with your puppy search! |
I suppose I can't read. I see you're getting another girl, instead of a boy. Sorry for the boy names.:) |
I agree with you that you want to pick a name that the dogs won't confuse. That's how I ended up with Sadie and Beemer although Beemer is Beemee most of the time. I'm partial to Sadie but that's just me. You might want to wait till you find your pup and use something from her lines. Beemer's dad is a car name and that's why we chose Beemer for him. |
About the name I think that it's better to get your puppy and then find a name. As far as double the trouble, double the fun, I have to say it's double the trouble, 10 times more fun. You have no idea how much fun it's going to be. Plus your older dog will help housbrake your new one Maria |
Thanks for the suggestions! And yorkieusa, I'd actually thought of using Kobie as a girl's name and I've seen Kodie as a girl too. My husband is pretty adamant about using a name that ends in that 'e' sound, but I didn't know that about dogs responding better to it. Happyhart, I love the idea of the "themed" names and how your's all relate to magic. I'm trying to think of more names that have something to do with good luck charms since we've got a four leaf Clover (Chloe) but Penny was the only thing I've come up with so far. I mean, horseshoes but how do you make a dog name out of that!?! LOL Zelah, I like Kari! We've also thought about Kyra and Karleigh/Carlie though I worry my husband would end up calling her Karl....When we first picked up Chloe, we were torn between Lily and Chloe but after meeting her Chloe was just perfect! I'm sure that will happen with our second one too. Maria, I'm sure you are so right about ten times the fun!! Chloe absolutely loves to be chased and while we were home over Thanksgiving she would pester and pester her 13 pound schnauzer-cousin, Maggie, until Maggie would chase her. Maggie is only about 8 months old and not very coordinated so she didn't stand a chance of catching little 5 pound Chloe who is so agile and runs like a little bunny. It was hilarious to watch! And sometimes Chloe would suddenly spin around and come to a halt and Maggie would immediately quit chasing. I was a little nervous at first because Maggie is so much bigger than Chloe, but Chloe did great about standing up for herself without getting aggressive if Maggie got too carried away. (And I was right there in the floor with them the whole time, just in case!) -C |
That’s great! Having 2 yorkies sure makes life fun, and yeah double the trouble, but in a great and fun way. If I were you I wouldn’t stress about the name. When we got our boy I thought days and days about the name, when he came home it suddenly started to call him Bruno( brun = brown, Bruno is a name we use for bears, brown bears) he looked just like a tiny fluffy bear. With Pixie- she had this name picked for her by the breeder, till the moment we got her home I was very sure I will change her name, but I started to call her all the names I had in mind... none were for her. And then I realized she has to be called Pixie :) Bruno and Pixie are not matching names, but is their names and it fits them very well :) I am sure when you will meet your new furbaby, you will feel that name. |

--Keep the "new guy" separated in his own room. The others will know he is there and will soon realize he's not going away. --Make all interactions between you, the resident dogs and the intruder dog positive. Chloe cannot conclude that bad things happen when new dog is around. --Do not freak out if Chloe corrects the new puppy - Barney gave very firm corrections and it looked and sounded worse than it is. Dogs know how to work it out amongst themselves. --When in doubt - hire a trainer! We did, and then we signed all three up for puppy class. That's right, my 8 year olds went back to basic obedience class. They were not too happy with a room full of puppies with bad manners but all the puppies in the class were better for the corrections given them by a male adult dog. Before we knew it, Teddy just was "accepted" -- first by Daisy which took about 3 months and then by Barney which took longer at about 6 months. Now, Teddy mostly hangs out and plays with Daisy. Teddy and Barney get along but Barney is just not that interested in Teddy. He does clean his ears in the morning and they chew bones together but there is no other play between them. Sad, but it's Barney's choice I guess. |
