Yorkie Turning Gray My yorkie puppy is turning gray on her back. She is 14 weeks. Does this usually mean she will be silver when she is older? She is light gray on her head which I assume will turn into tan. Also, when does a puppy normally get her adult coat. I think she has a cotton coat. |
That is generally the color you will end up with when they start changing that way. If you saw the parents, then that would give you a clue.:) |
Thanks for responding. Mother was standard dark blue/tan. Father was more silver. |

My little boy turned gray and then blonde eventually, so it's really hard to tell! |
WELCOME TO YT!!! I have read on here that those that break color early, tend to be lighter. Those that break later, tend to be darker. Nothing is written in stone though. Anything is possible I suppose. :) |
Ziva's mother was dark ,father silvery- she is mixed, dark nose and ears, silver head! At 18 months I don't know that her silver will ever turn. We think she is beautiful! |
Your yorkie is beautiful! My puppy seems to change rapidly. Today, it looks like her legs and face are more golden. A week ago, they were darker- a little reddish. I guess I will have to wait and see! Neither parent was golden. |
Joey's head starting turning silver around 14 weeks, but his saddle stayed dark. Eventually, I believe around 1 year, the silver turned tan, and his coat is that dark gun metal grey, that looks almost black. Usually the black black dogs have a cotton coat, and the metallic colors have a silky coat. It's not unusual for the gunmetal to be a lighter grey, but many breeders prefer the darker grey. I'm told that females often get lighter with each period, or I guess they call it "season" in dogs. |
