Seasonal Cautions For Christmas The yuletide is fast approaching, and new or old to yorkies, I though I'd start a thread on cautions around this time of year for your pups. What I ask members to do is copy this post into the body of their suggestions and then add onto the list under the category's listed. This list is by nowhere complete, but will be when we add our collective wisdom to it. Food Cautions: 1. Turkey dinner, dressing, and such is very rich food, don't be tempted to feed your little diva some of the human food. 2. Putting out nuts, chocolates for company is fine, just make sure your little Yorkie can NOT get to them 3. Alcohol is Extemely toxic to dogs; make sure your dogs do not ingest alcohol of any nature! Company is coming: 1. It is best if lots of company is coming, ie repeated door openings and closings, to have your dogs either in a Xpen, crate, or a room separate from the front door. The last thing you need is to have your Yorkie go missing on Christmas. 2. Kids and Yorkies - Children new to your Yorkie do need to be monitored not just by the child's parents but also by you. If you can't do, then again Xpen crate or close your dog off from the little tykes. 3. Establish visitor rules, calmly and upfront. This room is off limits for eg. Or if you are going to introduce your dog/pup, establish the ground rules of interaction. the Xmas tree Decorations and the gifts: 1. Hang ornaments up out of reach of your Yorkie. How tempting are all those shining baubles. And how dangerous. 2. When in doubt about what is contained in a gift you get, assume it is something your Yorkie shouldn't get into and place under the tree, just before you will open that luscious gift. 3. Extension cords; some Yorkies just love to chew those cords. Encase in plastic sheath, supervise, or tack up out of the reach of Yorkie mouths. Vet Care and Emergency Help 1. Now is the time to get your vet's number on emergency dial, and to know their holiday hours. 2. Put on that dial the nearest vet emergency hospital, and put into your GPS if you have one. Home Security Sadly many many break ins occur around this time of year. 1. The last thing we need is to lose our most precious possessions, so if you can take your Yorkie with you. This time of year or not, get your pet microchipped, and keep collar with id tags etc on them. 2. Check twice, windows and doors are locked. Leave a light on in a couple of places, timer switches are good, that cycle on and off different lights going on in the house. |

Thank you, this is great info! |
Great tips  Always nice to be reminded. |
Im coping this! |
Excellent Thread, Gail! ...... also to add that many Christmas plants are poisonous.... like Poinsettas! We have a home security system that I think was a great investment... the monthly fee isn't too bad AND gives me a little peace of mind. So many home invasions on the news..... it's scary. |

We too have a security system. It took us getting broke into to get one. In the long run it is well worth it! Also, don't forget to test yours occasionally. We were told to do it about every other month. I am amazed at how quickly our monitoring system will call us. Plus we have a cell backup in case the power goes out. Money well invested for peace of mind. |
Great reminders! Thanks! |
Great thread - tinsel and artificial garland are holiday favourites but extremely dangerous to our pets. If using, make sure it's fastened to the tree. |
Keeping your yorkie healthy during the seasons I know that poinsettias are toxic/poisonous to animals. Are all evergreens safe or not? ex. Noble Fir Maybe sticky any informative lists pertaining to this (unless I'm failing at using the search function) Searching "toxic" and "poinsettias" on this site is useless. A link would be wonderful, too. :) |
Thanks for sharing :) This is all great information. |
Christmas safety One other thing we did as Belle loves to explore behind things. We tied the tree to a screw in the wall with fish line to make sure it won't tip over on Belle. The further under the tree she can go the happier she is. Our Christmas should be interesting as Belle has found that removing all the tags is great fun:rolleyes:. It will be an open and guess type Christmas. Everyone enjoy and be safe. By the way, our security system is being married to a cop and a 9mm by my bed! |
Thanks for the reminders! I would like to add another caution something that I did. Last year, I got up hit the black Friday sales and came home a bit tired and distracted; I left my shopping bags on the floor. In the bags were a box of rasins that I'd just purchased...I don't think that they could have gotten into it but it is never something to leave to chance. So please be careful and just be mindful of things as the holildays tend to get a little bit hectic. |
This is all great info! And I definitely agree about waiting to place presents under the tree, or leaving ones that have consumables wrapped put away. One year we wrapped up some Dunkin Donuts coffee for my Grandfather (his FAVE lol) and my black lab nabbed the box. She sniffed around, stole it, and managed to get the paper off when we found her. They're amazing at finding things that have some sort of food, or something that is theirs. |
