Toy/Minature? I am in the process of looking for a new yorkie having lost Bubbles in February this year. Bubbles was a toy Yorkie and never grew that big, I liked having a dog that small as it was very managable for me and I loved the cuddles we had, and how he would fit neatly in my lap even at age 6! However whilst talking to some breeders today they have told me that there is no such thing as a toy or mianture yorkie and that they are all the same. I'm a tad confused. I'm sure that's not right. Can anybody explain? |
All yorkies are classified as a toy breed. There are smaller yorkies but maybe the breeders you are talking to dont breed for the smaller yorkies because of the possibility of health problems. You just need to find a breeder that breeds with a smaller sire. |
These breeders are right . There are no toy or miniature in the Yorkshire Terrier breed . |

The smaller yorkies definitely tend to be the ones that have more health problems but there are people on here that have small ones that dont have health problems. I have one that is 5 lbs and she is still small but she is sturdy. I think 4-5 lbs is a good size to look for if you want small. |
Thanks for that, it is a question I have often myself. Silly questions but do you mean 4-5lb's as their max weight or at birth? |
As their adult weight. My Jewels was about 12 ounces at 8 weeks so that kinda gives you a baby weight but the breeder should also be able to give you a weight estimate by the parents weight. |
 I don't know, My Ginger that I lost this summer was 15 years old. She was only 4.3 lbs and was a very healthy little thing for many years. She only started having problems the last couple years, which were natural for her age. She did have tooth problems but that's common for yorkies. I now have a little girl that is 7 mos old and only 2.4 lbs. She is very healthy and although she had to have her baby teeth pulled because they didn't come out. Also common among toys. I diagree with the common talk around here about tiny's not being healthy. I have known other small yorkies and they were also very robust and have lived long good lives. :aimeeyork |
Thank you so much Chacchi, that's exactly what I wanted to know. Much appreciated. Your babies are gorgeous, I just looked at their pictures. Adorable!! |
