Yorkies + Christmas Trees = ??????? Getting ready this week to decorate for Christmas....Just wondering how facinating the Christmas tree will be to our 4 month old Yorkies (x2)??? Any thoughts or advice??? I have to admit, I am a little nervous....Okay! a lot nervous!! LOL |
Rizzo is 11 months and this is his first X-mas, so far he ignores the tree...so far, lol :D |
Since I used to have cats, I have had a fake tree for years -- it was not as attractive a target nor as toxic as a real tree was. I'm not taking any chances this year -- the tree will go up but I will put unbreakable ornaments on the bottom AND put a fence around it for good measure. I have always been a SERIOUS Christmas decorator - villages, nativity scene, you name it - from floor to ceiling. In fact a friend who didn't know about my habit walked into my house one time and blurted out "My G*d! It looks like Santa Claus threw up in here!" This year I'm going to limit the decorations to the area above Yorkie level. T is a chewer -- and I don't want to risk her getting harmed by chewing on something potentially dangerous. |
I always had a beautiful real tree with glass ornaments. Then we learned Daisy was allergic to pine and alot of other things so the real tree went bye-bye. We bought a pre-lit artificial tree that is real looking and now their is a short in the strand of lights and we are not handy so it is getting donated to charity and maybe someone else can figure it out. Anyway this year I don't know what I'm going to do because last year, Teddy wanted to eat all the branches. He is still a puppy even though he is two. He is very immature and likes plants and trees. Every time he is outside in the yard, when we call him back, he stops at the rose bush to sample it. He does it like he has never done it before, but he has, millions of times. LOL |
Never use tinsel on a Christmas tree as it can cause a blockage if eaten by dogs or cats. Pine needles are toxic and can also cause a blockage if ingested. Don't let him drink out of the tree water. Make sure you have safe ornaments on the lower branches in case he steals one. Watch out for electrical cords for lights if your dog is a chewer. |
It doesn't phase him one way or another. I never use tinsel though. |
I was kind of worried about the same thing. We never got to decorate last year because we were in the middle of moving and I vowed I would make up for it this year. That was before I had 4 dogs to worry about and 15 cats. |
Max doesn't care about the tree, but Lily is a little more curious. She doesn't mess with it when I'm home but I put the xpen around it when I leave just to be safe. |

We use an articifial tree and we are also Christmas "power decorators" :D...I firmly believe if you don't have to rearrange your house for Christmas you just aren't doing it right! LOL! I also take cinnamon oil on a wash cloth and "wipe or rub" it on the electrical cords...it smells good, but the dogs hate it. They totally stay away from the tree and it adds a nice "Christmasy" smell to the living room. Our biggest issue a few years back was (puppy stage) was the "chewing" on the presents. Cinnamon sprayed the edges and bows....no more chewing...and also made sure they had access to something appropriate to chew on at all times. We did have the ER glass visit the very first year....Houston and the cat worked in concert to get them down.:eek:...so no more glass ornaments on the bottom 1.5 feet....we use that toul scarfing down there. :eek: Now if I could figure out how to get the cats to stop going after the "ting ting" we would be purrrrfect. :rolleyes: |
I must be lucky. This is Taycie's first Christmas. I will admit I am PHYSCO crazy when it comes to christmas and my Tree went up on Oct 17. Taycie had just turned 7 months. She has yet to even really go near it. She ignores it. She is not interested in it at all. |
Rhia liked to steal the ornaments off the ground when we were sorting them out to be hung, but that was about it. The tree itself TERRIFIED her because it was so big. She got used to its presence but always kept her distance. Silly puppy. :) Oh, and she's almost 3. |

I had real ones all my life and that was my favorite part of Christmas was the searching for the perfect tree and the smell of the pines, etc. I hate that most of my family now have fake trees- but we are getting a real one this year again. :) But no, we had dogs growing up and they never bothered with the real tree. As a puppy, Jackson pooped under ours :rolleyes: but he's been fine last year and this, haha. |
We don't have a real tree, we have a fake that is pre-lit. Buster & Maggie don't pay any attention to the tree or the presents under it. We don't use tinsel, there are some ornaments that hang on lower branches that make noise, I thought that would lure them in, but no. Good puppies! |
sadie's first year went fine she ignored the big tree and sometimes went under there to peek around, but we kept it in a corner and blocked access with the bigger presents...now we have two trees and we have snowmen all over the basement fireplace. today alone they stole that snowman off the fireplace step several times. but we're of the train them to "leave it" method rather than just put it all away. so we're going to see how it goes, possibly gate off our basement and we always pen up the doggies when we're not home, too many big bad things around to chew, destroy, or jump off of. wish us luck it's Bentley's first Christmas with us. |
hmmm, hadn't even thought about this dilemma, for ya'll. I haven't put up anything remotely resembling Christmas in close to 20yrs. Ever since the last kid left home. Saves me a whole lot of money and mess. I'm not a realy sentimental person... I know... Bah Humbug! We'll be visiting our DIL and grandkids for a couple days in the middle of December and she goes all out for Christmas, so that should be very interesting as we take the whole pack...hmmm |

Neither of mine are phased by the tree... Gwenni tries to chew on the branches if they fall of as she loves chewing on sticks. They pretty much ignore it otherwise. Now the presents under the tree... that's another story... I'd advise against bows tho ;p Good luck! |
We have a fake pre-lit Christmas tree. Ariel doesn't care for it, but just to be on the safe side, we don't hang any ornaments on the bottom of the tree. They're hung high enough where she won't be able to reach them. |
