My phone rings and the barking begins Every time my phone rings it's like magic~Pebbles starts barking and decides it's time to play with Doodlebug. She has the loudest most annoying high pitched yap that you could imagine. It's like I have little kids and they want mommy's attention. It's actually starting to get on my nerve since I take work calls at home all the time and it's pretty embarrassing since I do NOT work in a kennel. I've had to stop my conversation and either let them into the yard or give a treat to get them to quiet them. What's up with this behavior? |
My dog used to do the exact same thing!! I only made it worse by picking him up so he would be quiet. Then I would use the phone in another room to avoid the barking (Sammy had me trained very well!!). Then finally I would firmly say SHHH quiet!! Eventually it worked. I think he just outgrew it. Now he barks at the blender or the toaster.:) |
Joey goes nuts over the doorbell, but the phone doesn't seem to bother him. That was always the time my young sons would fight, it's like they knew I couldn't do anything about it, and it's so embarrassing. I guess you could ring yourself and pretend you're on the phone and practice a training routine. Some trainers suggest having them lie down or sit, and giving them a reward, for good behavior although you do have to be careful that the dog doesn't think you're rewarding the barking. Is it your house phone? Maybe just ringing it 50's times a day, will make him get use to the noise. |

Chipsie does that too. Every time the phone rings, the dryer timer buzzes, or the doorbell rings, or anytime it happens on TV. :p |
It's my cell phone but the barking is not really the ring of the phone~it's me talking on the phone. I guess I need to see when and why they are doing the barking. When I pretend talk they just ignore me. Oh go figure. They are just too smart for their own good. |
i am glad we are not alone with this ;) poppy barks at the phone ringing , the dyson , the postman , the newspaper being delivered , and very strange me putting the ironing board down , not up just down , and eastenders theme tune  love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
Ha! I have to lock myself in the bathroom to have a phone conversation with another human being... Tinkerbell will sit at my feet and just continually bark her fool head off. As soon as I hang up, she shuts up. I do think it's an attention getter... oh and to clarify... she doesn't bark at the ringing.... she barks when she hears me talking on the phone.... |
I did try a training technique, which backfired horribly. I thought if I put the phone on 'speaker' it would help her to hear another person talking, so I had DH call one day. He's her favorite person... big mistake. Now when he's not at home, she thinks he's in the phone! |
I totally know what you are going through! :) It is not the actually ringing that gets them, it is the fact that mommy is on the phone and not at their beckon call. I have actually had to go to the closet to take calls! I was "trying" to order checks the other day and Cooper decided to follow me around with her loudest sqeaky toy in tow, and Maddie barking and growling at her over the silly toy, which she never has anything to do with. The lady finally asked me if it was baby or dog sqeaking the toy. I had to go into the bedroom closet and shut the doors so she could get my account number correct. Who knows what my checks will say.. I forgot to mention, I can remember my sister and I getting into trouble for acting up while my mom was onthe phone. I have no idea why we did that to her but we did. |
Oh am I grateful I don't have this issue! My phone rings all day long. I do have the doorbell issue or the UPS/postal delivery issue. If I happen to be on the phone at the time, I'll just tell a customer that I was able to bring the dogs into the office today:rolleyes: |

Think of the bright side -- when they are barking at you while on the phone, they are not being rabbit killers  |
