Help Socialize my dog Hello, i've got a few problems that i need help with So my yorkie is about to turn 3 years old and i have had him since he was 10 weeks. When he was younger he was around other dogs (much bigger than him) and he always had a good time playing with them at his home and at friends houses. There was a period of time where he didn't play with a dog but he still always likes when dogs come over to his house. I've been trying to take him to a dog park nearby that is specifically for small/timid dogs but he just hides under my chair the whole time. I've tried walking him around the park to get used to the place but it just doesn't seem to work, he just stands by me and snaps at the other dogs who try to approach him. Any advice? Ok next thing, in march i moved to a new apartment and he started growling and sometimes barking at everyone that walked by the door, its very annoying and he never used to do it until i moved to a different apartment. I dont know how to make him stop. Thanks! |
I would continue to take him to the park. Don't give up. Perhaps you could take a ball or some outside toy to entice him to relax. Keep taking him. I think he needs to be taken to many and varied places so that he can learn to enjoy all sorts of different experiences. Take him to stores that allow pets. Take him for walks in downtown areas. Take him to park events. Let him learn to enjoy all sorts of different situations. He will become more comfortable with them over time and therefore will become more confident. I think that is what he is lacking - confidence. As for your living situation, I do believe they do better with living in the same home. Your problem is not uncommon. What you probably need to do is maybe start correcting him if he growls and barks at people passing by the door. Get a spray bottle of water or a can full of pennies and try those things when he growls or barks at passersby. Do you leave the tv on so he doesn't hear those noises so easily? I hope this can help you some. Would love to know how he does over time. |
Ok I thought I was the only one who had an older dog not socialized. Quincy is two years old never been socialized I have started to bring him to a doggie daycare twice a week. We have just completed our second week, they say he is doing great. I also took him to the Pet Fest at the park this past weekend, he was walking around all the different dogs really well I was so proud of him. No fussing, when he would get a little crowded he would scratch at my leg to pick him up, I would for just a couple of minutes then put him back down. It was wonderful!! |
