Boots or no boots?? Hey there! Well, the winter has arrived here in my area of Canada and Stuart's ambition for his morning walks has not subsided! As I took him out this morning in the new fresh snow I wondered if I should have had some little boots on him?? I did buy some and tried them on him when I got them a few weeks ago... of course he hated them and kept trying to kick them off... let alone how much of a pain it was to get him to sit still while trying to get them on his big fuzzy paws...his paws are seriously massive (even when trimmed!) for a 4 month old.... Sooo...I can't say im psyched to do the boot thing with him...but I worry about him getting too cold and me not realizing...he's not really a complainer so I dont know if he'd even try to tell me if he wasn't liking the cold....!?? So, I guess I just wonder what some of you other cold-weather dwellers do for your Furbabies in the snowy months!?? |
I'm not a cold dweller, but I would recommend boots for them for the snowy season, their little paws are so sensitive. Plus if they de-ice the roads with salt that could really hurt them. Make sure you have the right size boot for his paws as well, AllDogBoots has a great website, I'm not sure how she shipping goes for Canada but it might be a great place to start to make sure that you have the right size/type for your needs :D I so wish it would snow here, but alas, it's a warmer climate we just get the cold, cloudy, rainy weather here :( |
Boots, definitely. Mine stop walking and hold up one foot barefooted when they get too cold! |
If he really wants to walk, I'd go with boots. You can get him used to them by putting one on and letting him get used to that for a few days, then start putting two on, etc. Make sure you get a boot that has a really good fit. I have all kinds of rough weather gear for Thor, but his philosophy is: if you can't go nude, don't go at all. I live in SF and we have a long rainy season. I tried all different kinds of rain coats and booties, but he just looks sooooooo sad when I make him go out in the rain. He hangs his head and shuffles along like a mummy. |
I'm originally from Michigan. I personally am not a fan of boots but if you're dog will tolerate them I say go for it. My dog isn't too keen on them either. Now we are in Georgia and despite the raining winter season, Troy doesn't have a problem with going out! |
Im in Minnesota and I have been wondering the same thing. This is my little guys first winter and I am just shocked at how much he loves the snow. I bought him a couple of winter jackets. When I went into a local doggy boutique inquiring about boots they told me he would probably hate them and showed me a product called "mushers friend". Its a wax balm you put on the pads of their feet to protect them from the snow, salt, ice and also in the summer for hot pavement. It seems to be working good for me so far. |

I'm from Airdrie! Lovely weather we've had this week eh? Frick... Anyways, Lexi doesn't wear boots, and I don't think she needs them. My golden retriever used to get little snow balls between her pads which would really bother her. However this issue doesn't effect Lexi at all so she doesn't have boots. I don't think she'd like them too much either. |
I don't live in Canada but last year I felt like we did. Maryland got sooo much snow from December-March and Jackson did TONS of running, walking and playing in the snow and never needed boots. |
I'd be happy to help you look at several options for Stuart. I have quite a variety for little guys (Stuart may have big paws, but he's little!). If he's trying to kick them off, then they may not be the right boots for him. My Cooper will wear anything, but my puppy Max really isn't pleased with footwear. However, there are several types that he can tolerate. I'm happy to ship to Canada either First Class USPS (about $4 and 2 weeks) or $20 priority (4-6 days).
