A dog is NOT just for christmas. 'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town, Every shelter is full. We are lost but not found. Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare, We hope every minute that someone will care. They'll come to adopt us and give us the call, "Come here, Max and Sparkie ~ come fetch your new ball!" But now we just sit here and think of the days..... We were treated so fondly ~ we had baby ways. Once we were little, then we grew and we grew ~ Now we're no longer young, and we're no longer new. So out the back door we were thrown like trash, They reacted so quickly ~ why were they so rash? We "jump on the children," "don't come when they call", We "bark when they leave us," "climb over the wall." We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed, Wow we suffer the consequence of the error they made. If only they'd trained us, if only we knew... We'd have done what they asked us and worshipped them, too. We were left in back yard, or worse ~ left to roam... Now we're tired and lonely and out of a home. They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-by.... "Maybe someone else will give you a try." So now here we are, all confused and alone.... In a shelter with others who long for a home. The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat, With so many to care for, they can't stay to chat. They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer.... We know that they wonder how long we'll be here. We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads.... Of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds. Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears ~ Our friends filled with emptiness, worry and fear. If you can't adopt us and there's no room at your inn ~ Could you help with the bills and fill our food bin? We count on your kindness each day of the year ~ Can you give more than hope to everyone here? Taken from: Shelter Christmas |
 Very hard to read all the way through but oh this is so true. Please if there is anything you can do to help the babies in your local shelter I pray we all make that little extra effort minimally throughout the holiday season but would be great if we could all make one change to help contribute to them on a regular basis either through time or finances. If everyone one contribute just a little, the burden wouldn't be so great on so few. Many blessings to all... Peggy, Monkey & Maddie :daisy: |
Yes I agree. I will be taking some food and blankets to my local shelter this christmas. |
This is so sad, but it is so true, or people go and get a puppy for Christmas then abandon them when they find out it's not as easy as they think! I'm sitting her looking and cuddling my new little baby, Tinkerbelle, my brand new rescue furbaby. She's a 5 lb yorkie, 5 years old, that was found wandering the streets of Arkansas, I'm sure she was a puppy mill girl, with the habits she has! But she's so loveable! Skin and bones, and so willing to please! I can picture her little face in the poem above and feel so lucky we have her now to love! Thanks for reminding people how to help! |
There are so many things that can be done that are so easy! A lot of the Pet Photos with Santa at your local PetsMart directly benefit the rescues that are having them done! Tried a dog food that your Yorkie doesn't like? Donate the remainder to a rescue or a shelter. Old towels, blankets, etc....they can use it all. See a group in front of a Pet Store protesting puppy mills? Stop by McD's and get them a round of coffee! Help anywhere you can! |

That really made me tear up. It's so darn sad.:( |
Wow, this really hits home when you think of how many there are that have little hope and how fortunate all of our little ones are. Makes me very sad... |
Horror of Holidays Friend of mine runs a small dog pup rescue and she is at her compacity! I always thought the concern with animals at Christmas was how many people get or give a dog at Christmas as a gift that was not well thought through. However the real horror of holidays is the number of people who abandon their pets at the beginning and during the holidays to save money...if you are in the Stockton area she needs (in the least) foster homes as well as FOREVER homes...Marilyn of Pup's rescue the link is below...that's my personal rescue but the ASPCS is always a safe choice...so is any other organization in your area! Donations at shelter and rescues are so needed around the holidays! Many people who give year round feel the holiday budget crunch...(www.facebook.com/pups.rescue) animal shelters are the first expenditure cut to save money. |
The shelter I volunteer at is at risk of closing, They have gotten some local news attention and have been getting some much needed donations. We just started taking in dogs and cats again after 2 months of not being able to. The first day we had 6 cats and 3 dogs come in. Anyone who can please give what you can to any rescue or shelter. It is bad and getting worse. |

So, so sad to imagine all those little faces in that poem. My 12-year old son is currently collecting donations for our local shelters at his school and hopes to make some nice deliveries the week before Christmas. Bless his little heart. |
