neutered male still marks all the time...?
 

Ive mentioned this some in other posts, but i have a male yorkie and a female lhasa apso. I had my yorkie neuterred at six months and he still marks all the time. He does it espeacially at the corners of the couch so i have to keep them covered. Any suggestions? its driving me nuts.

Marking is caused by the hormone testosterone, and while the testes make the bulk of testosterone, the adrenal gland makes s some as well. This can vary considerably between dogs, and your dog's adrenal glands are making enough testosterone to produce marking. If you only had one dog, the adrenal glands probably wouldn't have kicked in so much, but another dog and the smells they produce can cause the adrenal glands to make extra testosterone. A couple of things you can do that might help, use a spray with enzymes, on all accidents. Natures' Miracle is a good one, and give it time to work, and repeat. You can even use a "black light" to see if any odor is left in the couch as they protein smells will cause the dog to return to the spot. I take Joey for walks and he's allowed to mark outside, and I think this helps keep him from marking inside. We have my sons' dogs visiting regularly and they are inclined to mark, so Joey's tempted, but the walking helps prevent marking inside. If all else fails use belly bands!

I have a 5 yr old Maltese that still marks the sofa and other areas in the house where he or other dogs have marked in the past. I had a vet here once and that was the question I asked her, She said, even though you get them fixed, they still have hormones that does not change. Some are markers and some are not. Yorkies are one of the hardest breeds to train. But marking and urinating in the house are not the same.My Maltese will mark in the house but if he has to potty he runs to the door and barks.I use a belly band while in the house . Good Luck

Ringo marks outside constantly. He marked one time in the house . . when I first brought Lucy home. But never again.

Rhett never marked until after he was neutered. Now we are in a constant battle around here. It's been frustrating to say the least. I made him a couple of belly bands, but he is lightening fast at getting them off.

Is he still getting out of them?:D

Troy is not neutered and has only attempted to mark once. I had my school books shipped to my house and he lifted his leg on my books. I yelled no, clapped my hands and he cowered and went to lay down. Never again had he attempted to mark in the house.

He will mark outside when he's out to potty. Troy doesn't like when I raise my voice, so he knows when he's in trouble and will try his best not to get into too much of it.

Is the female spayed? If not that could be why hes doing it

I have to keep belly bands on Charlie all the time. He has always been bad to mark even when he was the only dog. I finally got the belly band from Petco with the elastic around the outside...he don't get it off like he does without the elastic.

This is the same type that we use. A lady in our rescue makes them for $10 (I think) since they were the elastic, they have been much harder for the boys to try and wiggle out of.

I can't keep the dang things on him. Now when he sees me holding one, he runs in the other direction.

No advice for you, as I've never dealt with this. I dogsit for MANY dogs, most of them being males and none of them mark so I've never had experience. Jackson was neutered at 7 months and will lift his leg outdoors on trees, etc, but still squats to pee at home and never lifts his leg indoors.

But, they say to treat it just like potty training 101 and constant supervision, etc.

My Schnorkie is the marking master! Especially if there is another dog scent...we have three and even after 6 months of them all living together he still marked over them, he too was fixed and still marking...in fact he marks even when he runs of of urine...he holds up his leg and "pretends"!
HERE"S WHAT YOU DO...
1.kennel when you are not home and this takes up to two weeks
2.leash him to your body so he's with you at all time!
every time he lifts a leg or shows he's about to mark give him a NO... any kind of no you do I make a funny squeak sound to stop my dogs from doing stuff some ppl I know use a hand beeper...it takes effort in training and constant reminding/training but if you stick to it it works! My Scoober doesn't mark anymore...well my uncle came into town and we're watching him like a hawk...he hasn't yet but he just might still new smells of other ppl or dogs are hard to resist...especially in his own home! After the training remember to set your dog up to fail go to a dog boutique where dogs are welcome and watch like a hawk the want to mark will be hard to resist if you can make it through a pet store with your marking male and pass that test..you are cured! The sneaky markers are hard to train but kenneling and watching work for this! Never put a soiled anything in with your dog it teaches them soiled things are okay to have around...immediately clean all marked surfaces to remove scent so marking is stopped often dogs always mark the same spot because they like it and it has their scent already there...but not fresh enough

You'll have to try elastic like YORKIEZOO was talking about in the earlier post in this thread. Of course, if you can't catch him...:D
