Anybody have a 4lb yorkie? Hey Everybody! I have a yorkie puppy who is 7 months old. She should mature to around 4lbs. I was wondering what the average girth and length of a 4lb dog is. The reason I ask is because I have been buying her LOTS of stuff and am wondering if any of this clothing will even fit her in the future! :eek: |
I'd slow down, on the purchases...At 7 months, Apple weighed 4 lbs., or maybe a little less....She now weighs 5 1/2...She used to wear an extra small and now wears small...Cha Cha, my chorkie, is 4 lbs., and wears an extra small, so hand me downs work for her... |
I agree with Sweet Apple's advice to slow down on your purchases. You just can't take the weight charts for gospel. She could really surpise you on adult weight. I have a few things for Annie but I am waiting until she is close to a year old to buy a lot. I "think" she will wind up 3-4 pounds but I know it could easily be 5 or 6 too. AS far as length and girth -- even more possibilities!! Some yorkies are very short while others have the long bodies. Some have big middles and others are very lean. Asking for an average won't help narrow this down -- sorry! |

They can mature differently than you think sometimes. I have had some that i was sure would not make 5 lbs even at the small size at 7 or 8 months then end up being 6 lbs and not a fat 6 lbs either. Also at any weight be it 4 lbs or 7 lbs, one the same weight can look different and may actually look bigger depending on actual structure. For example, a 4lber with long leg will look bigger than a 4 lber wtih short leg. Leg can also grow after 6 months so one that you thought would be short legged ends up being taller than expected. That is why this breed can be so difficult to select show stock from litters and why if you want a show dog, don't buy a show dog until it is much closer to a year of age than not. And that is also why I end up spay/neutering one I ran on for show and it suddenly was not at all what I wanted for the show rings by the time it was 11 months a year or even more. I also don't guarantee size when selling a pup. I can give a best guess but even then was sure one I sold at about 8 or 9 months would not make 5 lbs and she did and went to 6 lbs. |
My 2 year old female is 5-5.5lbs and has a very thin long body. It's really hard to find her things that fit good because it's either too baggy or too short. I have a 4.5 lb male who has a short and thick body. They both wear a size small. |
The breeder said Harlow would be about 4lbs when fully grown, but at her last vet visit they said she already weighed three, so I'm thinking she'll be bigger than what he initially thought, I would just buy things you think she'll use now and buy new things as she grows =] |
I agree with not really being able to determine what size a yorkie or any dog will end up being by the time they are an adult. My little yorkie girl weighed 3 lbs. 8 oz. when I took Princess in for spay surgery mid September at 7 1/2 months. Princess is almost 9 1/2 months and it appears as though she has stopped growing. But who knows, she may grow and weigh more since she was spayed. Either way, I love Princess whatever size she becomes. Princess has been wearing XXS and XS since I bought her in April. It all depends on clothing, where it is made and where I bought it from. I know she will most likely never wear anything larger than XS. I have bought ALOT of clothing for Princess. I am now searching for PJ's or something to wear under her winter coats for our cold winters here in Ohio. Also wanting to make her some fleece boots with velcro straps. |
Sadie at 3.8lbs is long and thin also. xxs clothing fits her girth but not her length. XS is too baggy on her. Sadie was 2.5lbs at 7months. From neck to tail she is 8 1/2 inches. |
My Razael weighed 3 pounds 6 oz. at 7 months old, and now at 3 years old she's almost 8 pounds. She's been almost 8 pounds for 18 months now. I thought she was going to stay around 4 pounds and had beautiful sweaters made for her and now she's outgrown them. I even had Cindy (chattiesmom) make her another harness. So yes, I wouldn't put a lot of money into clothes till she's at least 2 years old. They do have growth spurts it seems. ;) |
I'd slow down on the buying also. Tia was 8 oz at 10 wks and if you go by the chart, she wouldn't get to probably 1.5 lbs. Even the breeder said that she 'might' get to that weight if I worked hard at it. I bought her sweaters for that size, knowing that I could get her a little bigger. Well, those sweaters are now Ally's. Miss Piggy (Tia) is somewhere over 4 lbs. When she was spayed on 9/11, she weighed 4 lbs 2 oz. I'm pretty sure she has gained some weight. I'm going to take her in this week to get her weighed. Ally went by the chart, Tia did not. You just never know. Good luck! |
It's impossible to predict, so I'd just buy her things as she grows. My two are 4 lbs and 8 lbs, but are the same length from neck to tail:laugh: So while weight does play a role in clothing sizes, stuff doesn't always fit right because of their length or girth. |
