Buddy for Frank - Female or Male? That is the question.. Hello all... So in need of some advice. We have decided to add another fur babie to our household... we currently have just Frank who is almost a 4 year old yorkie. He is very dominant male in all circumstances... with other dogs etc. We have decided on getting a Boston Terrier this time around as it was hubby's pick. From my research it looks as though the females from that breed are the most dominant - so I'm putting this out there to any experts who can offer any advice. We are going to meet the puppies next week so we don't have our heart set on any particular one. Thoughts? Tips? Any advice is helpful! Thanks! Frankie's Mom |
For a dominant male, I would definitely suggest a submissive female. The breeder should know their personalities and be able to find you a good match. Be sure to let the two dogs meet on neutral territory before bringing her home. :) |
I've always heard that if you put two males together, sometimes they fight. I'd probably do a male and female. Sometimes two females will do the same. |
For a dominant male; you definitely need a submissive female. I'd say temprement is going to be more important than breed. I have a dominant male Westie and my Vet and breeder strongly suggested a female - one without delusions of grandeur as well. Lucy is a submissive female and they make a great team. Another male dog in my household simply would not have worked with Ringo's dominant personality. |
just be prepared for marking is all I can say. I have a male and brought home a female lhasa and he's been neutered and still marks all the time. Far more often than I'd appreciate after being neutered. |
I keep hearing get a female to avoid fighting. Does anyone have a male and female that fight? Right now things are peaceful. I would like another, but I don't want to disturb the peace. |

Thanks everyone for all the advice! It seems the overwhelming response is female which is basically what I had been thinking... I just want to make sure we make the right decision as I really don't want to upset the household.. Frank has been an 'only child' for four years so this is a choice we don't take lightly! As the babes are only a few weeks old the breeder doesn't have much advice on personality yet but by the time we go to meet them she said she will have a pretty good idea. So consensus is look for a submissive female? When meeting a pack of puppies how can you really tell? (other then what the breeder says...) |
I really dont know, but I wonder if it would be a good idea to take your yorkie w u to get the new baby....? just curios myself. |
There are some temprement tests you can do if/when you get to visit before choosing a pup. I'll post a link if I can find it; but you will have to rely a good bit on your breeder. I don't know much about Boston's . . . are they supposed to have a laid back personality in general? |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for all your tips and advice! Went to see the breeder and we made our pick! They had one female that was more to the docile side...breeder says she is the most calm and laid back of the litter... so this seemed like the right fit! Here is a pic of her :) Sorry it's not very clear took it with my phone...Funny at 4 weeks she is about the size that Frank was at 12! Maybe even bigger? |
