Hair ideas?! Does anyone have any idea on what to do with my boy yorkies hair?! I think the little girl yorkies look SO cute with their hair in a bow! But having a boy i'm stuck on how to get his hair out of his face. Sometimes i put it up with a rubber band…but my boyfriend tells me he looks like a sumo wrestler! |
1 Attachment(s) I keep my male is a topknot. I use rubber bands or the little kids pony tail holders in darlk colors. I do have a few bot bows for when I take him out. I think boy or girl they look so cute in a topknot. My Pixie doesn't have a topknot. I just keep it short and spikey. |
1 Attachment(s) I agree -- boys and girls alike look best with a bow! There are some great bow makers here on YT and they will be happy to make you "boy" bows. Ladymom made me the cutest boy bows with sports themes. I love them. My problem is Ben will not leave a bow in. Even the bands themselves annoy him. He rubs his head on chairs, sofa, bed, anything to try to get it out. The bow usually comes out okay but he will knot his hair badly trying to get the band out. The other dogs tend to help him too. So, I gave up and gave him a little visor cut. If you can, go with the bows, but if he won't leave them in, or you just decide you don't like bows on boys take a look at Ben's haircut (below)to see a short cut that requires to no bow. As it grows out, it looks like a visor that sticks out away from his head, sort of shading his eyes. |

Sumo wrestler, lol, I like that. Many of us call our boy's topknots "ninja knots" for the males in the family, but the truth of it is, both males and males require a topknot in the show ring. There is really no difference in the way a male and female should look aside from the sex organs! I always keep Joey's hair in a top knot, and really like those little mini claw clips to cover the band; it looks masculine enough. Here's a picture: Goody #80473 Micro Mini Claw Clip 15pcs :: Beautyofnewyork.com, and you can buy them at grocery stores and elsewhere. We use a bow now and then for special occasions. |
I agree that boys look just as nice as girls in a top knot. I like how it keeps the hair out of their eyes too. :) |
I also have the same problem. I have a boy (Bentley) and I just put blue rubber bands in his hair. Although I hates them being in his hair, and rubs on the carpet, couch, and wall to try and get it out. |
Denali's bangs are at an awkward stage right now so they just barely cover his eyes. (We are growing his hair out) So what i normally do is put his bangs up in a little ponytail on his head with a no pull hair band from the baby section( i use orange, yellow, and red normally). He gets one of those put in his hair right after a bath and wears it for a couple days then just runs around with his hair all crazy for a day or two. :) But he also has bows that i both made and bought that he wears occasionally but even though they are colors like blue and green but people still think he is girl. But to me he looks like mommy's little boy. |
1 Attachment(s) I found the perfect solution for the awkward hair length. HAIR CLIP! Attachment 330942 Sorry, I don't have a close up shot. I already have bands and bows on the way for when his hair is finally long enough for a top knot. And Nancy, thanks for the idea!! I have the teeny clips that I had originally bought for Kaji, but had no idea how to use them. Do you have a pic of Joey in his "ninja knot"? |

I say get him a lovely masculine black bow. lol :O) it would be cute if anybody could find one done in sports theme type ribbon. I'd love to have had the bows in my boys hair when I first got him. But, I didn't get him use enough to be brush or something. He doesn't like the brush. He sees it and sometimes runs off. Sometimes I can get brushes through his hair if he's in my lap and sleepy or calm. But I have to keep my boy in a short hair cut. But he's a cutie. |
I band my boys hair, I dress them up, they have lots of boy bows and clips :D I love it! Girl or Boy, it doesn't matter, they are all the cutest little things on the planet! :) |

Joey's breeder gave me a bone shaped pillow that she said to use for grooming and never for play. He places his head on the pillow as soon as I start brushing his forehead with a soft baby brush. He's learned to be very patient with me. I'm all thumbs and it occasionally takes me some time, but he doesn't seem to mind waiting. |
Good advice given already. I agree with Nancy, don't put a band on too tightly to start! Bow training begins with a simple band, then a lightweight tiny bow (nothing with a fancy, heavy center), and then (if you wish) you can graduate to something larger like a 5/8" bow. Give your little guy time to adjust to each gradual step. As others have suggested, clips are a good idea. So are scrunchies - easy on the hair and easy to pop in. Naturally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that I have a huge selection of boy bows, scrunchies, clips/barrettes, etc. ;) Anyway, good luck with the bow training! If you have any questions, feel free to ask - I'm happy to help when I can. :) |
Well just tonight i tried out a new brush. As I said before my boy doesntlike to be brushed. Rarely, u can get some strokes in if he's sleepy and u catch him in a certain mood. I thought he didny like my cheapo brush and that maybe it was comfortable and bought one today w the small then brisles like the groomer uses, I got it out and let him (yorkie)and the lhasa girl i have sniff the brusf abd check it out. But he'd just get wild eyed and jump away when it came near him. Funny, but not sure how to get him to let me get him brushed good, espeacially the tender areas like the legs and belly. So he gets tangly and we have to get him buzzed at the groomers. I love the dogs in the long coats, they are georgeous, but Im content w the shorter or med coat. I just wish i could get him to like the brush. Im considering saving up and getting a groomer table. Do more stuff at home and thought it'd be easier to get him up there where he cant fight as much. |
1 Attachment(s) I use clear grooming bands for both my boy and girl's hair. I think they both look great with their hair up. |
how about the schnooky look or whatever her name is, my friend did it on his Chinese crested and it was adorable |
3 Attachment(s) I keep my girl Rio in a full coat & top knot, but I have my boy Bullet in a Westie cut. Round face, short on back, full skirt. One full coat is enough work for me! |

1 Attachment(s) Love the long hair, but find it is easier to keep the hair short and cute. Hope you like my picture! |
