Help us! I am having the hardest time potty training Huxtyn!! I had a lab and he was a breeze to train. Not this little guy! He just goes whenever he wants to and i have been working so hard with him for the past 5 months! They say that dogs dont like to "do their business" where they sleep, but my little guy could honestly care less! Stubborn!! But i love him haha! I also have tried several differed brand of puppy pads and he pays NO attention to them at all! Help us! :( |
How big a space does he have access to? Sounds to me like you need to confine him to smaller space. |
The first thing you need to realize, is that it is not the dog being stubborn. He just doesn't understand, or cannot hold it. It would be helpful to know the age and size of the, puppy along with his feeding schedule and your entire daily routine. |
try putting him in a crate w a bed so hes comfy and when you let him out take him strait to the pad, block him from running off of it even, then when/if he goes give him treats praise etc.... thats pretty well how i trained mine. If you can make out his schedule about the times that he goes would help. Also u have to watch him close while he is out. if he goes off the pad scold him with a lod no, ah ah or clap ur hands then take him stait to the pad. also i think i read once that they can hold it an hour per their age . like, 3 months three hours i guess. Good luck..... |
He has a small crate. Part of it is blocked off because even the small crate was too much room for him. He is 6 months old. I give his food and water out to him in the morning and take it away at 5 at night. After 5 i give him water as needed. I take him out several times a day. I dont really have a specific timing. I stay at home almost every day, so i just keep my eye on him at all times. He is pretty good at not doing his business in the house, unless he's not being watched close enought…which rarely happens. When he needs to go he puts his paws on the front door and kinda looks around thats my sign to get him out. He's not bad about going in the house…He just mainly has a problem using his crate to go. I even tried putting him in a basket that he LOVES thinking that there was no way he would go potty or anything in there. Well sure enough he did both of his "jobs" and was just laying in it. This is my first yorkie so im jsut trying to learn more! |
so is it that he just goes in his crate? Is it during the night? |

Yeah it's mainly overnight. Just when he is in his crate. |
I suggest setting your alarm and taking him out for potty during the night. |

he probably needs potty breaks at nite |
It seems crazy to wake up in the middle of the night to let him out. But i guess you gotta do what you gotta do! :) I go to bed around 10 and wake up at 7. What is a good time to set an alarm? |
Is the crate near you? As soon as I moved my babies' crate near me, they don't need to get up in the night. They just needed me. |
thats why I did the pee pad thing. We live close to the road, and no fenced in yard and with two small dogs I didn't want to have to worry about going in and out w them. But I would go by the one hour per age they can hold it by to know "about" when he may need to potty. You may want to do a search on that just to read more about it, but I do believe I read that somewhere that they can hold it one our per age. Just guessing thats in "months". |
