Do I just bite the bullet and let Elvis out of the kitchen? He seems antsy/wanting to play more. He is 4 1/2 months. Hasn't peed in our house in a couple of weeks, hasn't pooped here either (he did poop in a friends house after playing w/her dog for a while...she was dogsitting) Do I just expect a couple accidents and that he'll figure it out? It's ironic since I am dealing w/potty training my 2 1/2 year old dd and not wanting to put her in undies. |

I'd let him try to be out more, though not full access to the house yet. Hope it goes well for you. |
I guess the question becomes when is he potty trained? He's contained in the kitchen during the day, crated when we leave and at night. He's reliable in the containment of the kitchen now...how/when should I start giving him supervised play out of the kitchen? |
Each dog is different. I think you just have to slowly give them more freedom. Look at this way... a dog typically won't naturally potty in his den (aka crate) so you want to get to the point where your dog views your WHOLE house as his "den" and he won't potty in it. If that makes sense. Just take it slow. I was lucky enough to be home with Jackson a lot as a puppy so I was able to give him freedom and watch him ALL the time. When they ARE free at such a young age, you cannot seriously take your eye off them for a second. So, it's nice to be able to expose them to the rest of the house, so they DO learn but you have to be diligent about it. Whenever I could not keep my eye on him, he went into the ex-pen. By 5 1/2 months old, he had free roam of the house. But we basically did crate for the first 4 weeks I had him, then moved to an expen, then he was gated in my bedroom, then he was allowed into my 'section' of the house (with a living space, bedroom and bathroom separated from my parents side of the house). And then he was allowed to have free roam of the entire house. |
What we did was let Shay out in evenings when we were in the living room, as long as we were watching him...start with short periods of time...I would open gate and let him go and at first every 15 min. I would take him to his puppy pad... I was slow on letting Shay have fun run, all the time...okay painfully slow..lol..after reading a post a couple weeks ago, I decided it was time....so he has fun run as long as I am home...and doing amazing!!!!!
