Worlds smallest yorkie? I was in town this weekend and a couple sitting down at a small table had a few dogs. My brother caught my attention by letting me know they were yorkie's. I knew they were fuly grown by there coat coloring. One was as small as my hand. "not kidding" The woman proceeded to try and tell us she was a "teacup" and the smallest in the world. Yes, I knew she was full of B.S. but this little one was very small , and absolutely precious. She was well groomed with her hair nearly touching the ground with perfect markings. They had anther one a little bigger just as cute . Bt, the woman really set me off. They also had a yorkiepoo . I asked them if they had more , and they said YES. Then asked if they did any breeding. The mother answered No , but the daughter said yes. The husband said nothing . He was feeding them something that looked like potato salad. I noted that , as well as that they all wore little collars on their necks. They looked very cute , but the older woman really got on my nerves . "smalleet yorkie in the world? The food , and her attitude just did not seem right. I just said that I would be so afraid to step on them they were so tiny. As cute as they were I was very grateful that my "big Yorkie" 7Lbs was huge compared to the wee ones. I hoped that not all yorkie owners with tiny ones had the same type of reaction as they did. I could tell they had a lot of people come talk to them about their babies. Old lady was not telling us anything true about yorkies at all though. |
My goodness, I sure wouldn't be bragging about having the "smallest yorkie in the world"! I ran across a girl with a tiny 3-pounder at PetSmart yesterday. Even one that tiny would terrify me. I like my bigger babies. |
 on them!!! I thought nothing of "teacup" until coming to this site. But now the word about makes my head spin. Little is little but when I hear teacup it about makes my head spin b/c I immediately think they are playing it up. UGH! And potato salad... really??? Oh heavens! They sure have a lot to learn. Those poor "teacup" babies! Peggy, Monkey & Maddie :daisy: |
Im sure its not the smallest but probably the smallest shes ever seen. I have a neighbor that has an extremely tiny chihauhua and he loves to show it off and tell how tiny it is. It seems to be a common theme with people who have tiny dogs. It used to get on my nerves but it doesnt really anymore. I can see why people are attracted to the tiny ones they are adorable and they are different so they are gonna brag about themand be proud of them. Im just glad Ive got bigger ones and I dont have to worry about them getting hurt constantly. I dont think its good that she was feeding them food that looked like potatoe salad but what are you gonna do eventually that diet will catch up to her dog |
I agree. Sadie is five pounds and Beemer is 3 1/2 pounds. He will be a year old this month. His breeder told me that his dad was a slow grower and she still thinks he'll be close to Sadie's size. I really hope so becuase I can tell you - there is a huge difference in the feeling of sturdiness when I pick Sadie up versus him. Even though I think Sadie is really little - I'm constantly afraid Beemer's going to hurt himself. There just isn't much there! |
I cant imagine a dog smaller than my Sadie who is just over 3lbs. She seems so timy compared to her 7lb sister Penny. |
Jesse is 3lbs and if he were any smaller my nerves would be shot, it is stressful enough now with him being that size, I can't imagine smaller. Why people are so proud of having a teeny tiny I just don't know, I've read about little ones being full grown at 1.8lbs That is beyond me. I feel bad for the babies :( |
my wee yorkie is jus over 4months and is still only 1lb in weight.... really hope she gains abit more though....shes a very fussy eater!!!:( |
Wow! When I first got Lulu I was looking for her to be smaller because that is what I envisioned her to be but not I couldn't imagine having a little 3 pounder lol Lulu is very active and I have to run and catch her sometimes. Also, I have children. I would be too worried about her getting hurt or if she ran in the street how noone would be able to see her because she is so small. I just hope that they keep a watchful eye on them. Bragging that she is the smallest yorkie in the world can bring a lot of attention to her and people are cruel. Someone may try to take her thinking they could make money off of her or something. :( |
I have problems with sadie crawling and hiding under furnature only 3ins off the ground. |

Those are amazing stories. These tiny little ones I saw over the weekenk were absolutely precious. I have never seen them that tiny before. My Suzi was 3 Lbs already at 12weeks old. I jusr felt that the older woman was quite arrogant and really did not know what the heck that "white stuff" they were spoon feeding their yorkies. I almost told them about YT but they seemed too fool of themselves to apreciate such a great site , so I kept quiet. I also have a hearty little Shi Tzu. Her legs are a lot shorter then my Yorkie's but she is chunkier. Suzi looks a little taller too, but she is more smaler boned then the shih tzu. I love yorkie's to death , and it is amazing to see just how tiny and big they can become. :) |
My little Princess is 9 months old today and weighs less than 4 lbs. When I had her spayed in September she weighed 3 lbs. 8 oz. I am still hoping maybe she will reach 4 lbs. I definitely not want to have small children around Princess. I would be so worried she could get hurt accidently. I can't even imagine having a yorkie as tiny as the ones you met recently! And feeding them potato salad! Yikes! |
I get just the opposite. I have a tiny girl and take her with me alot for her safety and health. If no one will be here then she goes. With the other 5 running around they dont mean to trample her but they just do when they hear a noise and she could get seriously hurt. People in public see her and ask if she is a "teacup". I have spent many hours educating people that there is no such thing, that it is just a marketing ploy for unethical breeders to suck the uneducated public out of their hard earned money for a little sickly dog. I then go into how much I have spent on Emmas vet care in the 18 months since her birth (well over 3 grand) not counting the hours and hours of time getting up with her every 4 hours round the clock till she was 6 months old to feed her. No vacations, no family trips, no going to cousins weddings 3 hours away.... and on and on. They stare at me with a look of a deer caught in headlights, then giggle and say I still want one.:mad: The many hours of educating thinking that I may make the difference once in a while, I hope. :aimeeyork |
Tabby's only 3.2 lbs right now, about 16-17 weeks old. I ran across a lady with a pair of yorkies, one 4 lbs and one 5. They weren't any bigger than Tab but heftier... sturdier. I'm hoping she puts on weight. She doen't seem "fragile" to me though. She beats up her "cousin," an 18 lb. dachshund, constantly, and holds her own easily with my parents' dogs, who are around 60 and 70 lbs each. I still want her to eat more and bulk up though. |
I have a puppy right now and to be honest, I had thought that if she just stayed this little forever it would be awesome! She is just so CUTE to me at this size. I can hold her easily in one hand. She is wonderful with travelling. I have one carrier that actually makes a perfect crate for her in the car and hotel room. This size is so handy as well as cute. But this past week, the other two dogs accidently ran her over in a mad dash outside and hurt her little leg. Had to take her in for xrays. Even though nothing is broken she is still limping a bit and I have to keep her away from the other two for fear it will get injured further. This just drove the dangers of having a tiny one into my head. So easily hurt even when you are trying to be cautious. So, I am glad she still has a lot more growing to do. I really wish they would just come out and allow "teacup" as an adjective and then put a range to it. Like under 3 pounds is a teacup. That would stop all of the unscrupulous dealers using it to describe all of their dogs even ones that wind up well OVER the standard. (Well probably not -- they will lie anytime they think it will make them more money). But so much of the general public use the term teacup, meaning nothing derogatory or sneaky about it. I think it would be great if we did have it as part of the accepted nomenclature. I don't ever act mad or uppity if anyone asks me if mine are teacup. I do shorten conversations when owners tell me theirs is a teacup, with their noses in the air (owners nose not puppy nose) :D I do wish people would not breed small yorkies (any under 5 pounds). It is just so dangerous breeding any of them, and to keep trying for the tiniest puppies, while putting moms in peril is just not right. But when a tiny does come out naturally with regular sized parents, I think they are adorable. Probably best in single pet homes, or with another of its size. But Yorkies are adorable at any size! |

Troy was 2.8 pounds for the longest time as a puppy. He fell one day and I about died. Took him to the ER vet, stayed home from work and stared at him the whole day. He was in shock for an hour. He's grown and is much sturdier now that he's 15 months at 4.5 pounds. I like his size but I wouldn't want a teeny tiny yorkie. |
LOL, all these small Yorkies. Jackson was 5lbs when I got him at 9 weeks old and I thought he was SOOOO small. I honestly had not ever held a smaller dog at that point in time. So I certainly can't imagine owning a little one. I personally would never want a dog under 10lbs just based upon my lifestyle. Anybody who is purposely looking for a dog under 3lbs... why not just go get a hamster? Seriously. With people breeding for these small sizes, they are also taking away the dogs ability to truly be a dog (in a lot of cases). A 2lb dog simply cannot do everything any other dog can do and IMO, that can take away from their quality of life. |
You are so right. I can't imagine a dog that small. Zach was about three and a half pounds at 16 weeks. Now he's over 5 lbs. His dad was eight pounds and his mom was six and a half pound so I'm hoping Zach has a little more growing to do. We have 2 guinea pigs that are over a pound each. I can't imagine owning a dog that small and having it run around the house with my 2 50 lbs Bassets and my 12 lb Shorkie. |

When we got Dinky, the breeder told me he would be under 3.5 lbs, but I thought she was probably exaggerating. His mom looked as if she were at least 5 lbs, and word is that his dad is 3.5 Anyway, he's 9 months old, he weighs about 3 and a quarter lbs. He doesn't seem to be getting any bigger. He has been at the same weight since September. I was hoping he would get to a nice sturdy 4 lbs. We were not rally looking for a dog that small, but he seemed very calm and sweet, so we chose him. As it turns out, he is still calm and sweet--and still very little. Despite his little size, Dinky walks like a champ. We walk 2 miles every night, and he walks at least half of that. We are sure this is making him sturdy and strong. I hope he is a "slow grower." I want him healthy and strong, but well, he IS named Dinky!:animal36 |
Took my Rudy to the Vet yesterday and Were extremely excited to hear that almost 3 years old he has finally reached 3.8lbs :D You will never know how everyday we struggle to get him to gain weight. I find that because he is so tiny people always come up to us and ask if he is a teacup, at first I would explain that there is no such thing and they usually dont listen and would say to a friend or whomever they are with look at this little teacup yorkie:confused: Now i just smile and say he is smaller than normal and struggle with him to gain and maintain his weight! The vet says he is just small boned and will probably never get to 4lbs. but I live in HOPE! he is just so skinny compared to my other babies:) |
My Tink finally made it to 4 lbs at 6 months old. I never intended on owning a dog quite this small, but it was love at first sight. I am still hoping she will gain a little more before she is done growing, but she is a tough cookie either way. Her small size did not hinder her hiking the trails with us. |
miss pris my little girl is 2yrs old at 2.6 ponds i wish she was bigger always have to watch so you don't step on her .if i let her outside i have to be out with her we have miniature horses. and she loves them she wants to sneak off to go to them. and i am a vol.firefighter/emt. and i am gone long hours and leave her home along |
