Growling when they play My oldest boy, Winston, is almost two and my new baby girl, Scarlett, is now 16 weeks. They seems to be getting along great except sometimes when they play Winston growls at her. Is this him putting her in her place or should I be worried? I just don't want any bad behavior to start early. Thanks for the help! |
Muffin used to growl - not ferociously - when we were playing kind of rough. It was just play growling though. Nothing mean. She wouldn't have bitten ever. In fact, sometimes I'll kiss Kacee just on top of her nose and she will growl under her breath, but she won't bite for anything, either. I am always doing that to her when we are playing, too. A lot of puppies playing growl - usually quietly. |
Thanks. I guess I just need reassurance. Sometimes it sounds very playful and other times it sounds grumpy. I just want to make sure he gets along with my newest baby for the long haul. |
Ours growl...and sometime growl when they play with a toy alone. Generally we watch the tail. If it seems to be wagging or erect with a quick side to side "jerk" wag, then it is most likely just playful fun. |
my two are 6 years (Soph) and 6 months (Gulliver) and there are times when they're playing that i think it's a pack of wolves instead of two little dogs. so long as i'm just hearing growling and not hearing any sudden squeals i just let them go. the way their tails are wagging I can tell they're just having fun. |
Growling My baby Bella growls when she wants to play and no one pays attention to her..she gets extremely bossy..she plays catch all day:confused: ..goodness! i don't have a choice...I either play or play!:eek: |
My dogs growl when they play and they growl when they're angry at each other. I just have to watch the tail to tell what kind of growl it is. When I hear a yelp I come running but it's usally my bassets who are crying because Zach my yorkie bites their ears. |
I believe growling while playing is normal and isn't a sign of aggression. It's more a sound of "let's play more!" Rio and Bullet growl at each other all the time while they play, as well as bite and pounce on each other. You will just KNOW when the growl or play fighting turns real, as it sounds altogether different. Much louder, intense, and REAL! |
That is normal. My Jewels growls when she plays and she couldnt and wouldnt hurt a flea. It is all play for her. If its true aggressive growling youll be able to tell the difference |
After reading everyone's posts I realize that I can tell the difference and that is what I don't like. Growling when they play does not bother me at, it is when she walks up to him while I am preparing their food and he turns around and gives a quick VERY grumpy growl or if he is sleeping or trying to do something and gives that same grumpy growl. I guess my real question is, how do I stop that from happening? |
I have a pup that growls when the other pups touch her while she is sleeping. She does not hurt them...just is a vocal girl. I think he might just be setting limits....I would not try to stop that....just watch to be sure it does not escalate to a problem. It probably will not...he is just letting her know to leave him alone during certain times. He wants his own space! :) |
My Penny has the same growl during play and when shes annoyed by her sis or guarding something. Penny has never bit us either. |
