How do I get my Yorkie to like collar and clothes? I have a new Yorkie puppy she is 11 weeks old. I have tried to put a collar on her and she does not like it. She goes and hides. I also have tried to put a shirt on her and she does the same thing. Is there a way to get them used to these things without them thinking that they are being punished? |
You should probably consider a harness for your yorkie. They are so small and they can be injured easily from a collar. I had to get my yorkie a kitten harness when she was a pup that was the only size that would fit her. You have to keep trying with the clothes the pup will get used to it. Have fun with your new puppy:) |
my girls wear a collar for id purposes only. It was getting them used to the harness that was the hard part. I started by letting them wear a harness while I was at home. None to sya the least we have had a lot of chewed harnesses. So make sure u buy some back ups. : ) they will eventually get used to the collar. We never take ours off just in case. As for clothes give it some time but some dogs just do not like them. However when its freezing outside they will eventually get used to sweaters and coats. Congrats on your girl |
They aren't used to the collar because they have never worn one before so it takes time just make sure its not so loose that they can get there mouth stuck. Callie scratched at her collar a lot but now if its not on her for like a bath she cant wait to have it put back on, a few times she has even brought it to me to put back on. When you walk your yorkie remember you should never hook the leash to the collar but use a harness. Callie never had a problem with clothes she even puts her own head and legs in so I'm not sure what to tell you about the clothes, maybe put a shirt on her and then give her a treat. |
I purchased a harness too but it was too big, so I have to take it back and get another one. We go camping in the summer and I need to have her on a leash at all times. My other dog. Maltese/papillon mix had no problem with a collar. We go outside with her at all times since she is still small and I am afraid of a big bird/other animal taking her. We do live in a subdivision, but you just never know. |
We also gave treats and then LOTS of praise. Now if the clothes come out its almost impossible to get them still long enough to get them on them they get so excited. Our little Houston would just let you put them all on him!! He loves his Colts Jersey and his Arkansas Razorbacks Jersey (but its too small now! ) |
Try letting her play with it a bit i have a little guy that is just over a pound right now so he is wearing a very small rabbit harness and i started with just 10min at a time and after about 1 week he is now wearing it from morning to night i have his id tag right on his harness as well as small bell, now at least i no whered he is good luck !! |
It all depends on the dog. They have individual personalities and so some like collars/harnesses/clothes and some do not. Kinda like people. My DH would love to run around nekkid, but something about decency laws prevents that. Baby and Bug get sooo excited when I get the clothes and harnesses out that they start to shake and dance. They hate having the collar off when they get a bath. Baxter on the other hand, does not like clothes. He tries to get under a chair or something where I cannot get him. In the winter I insist he wears a jacket in the freezing cold and once he figures out he is not going out without it he acquiesces. The new girls seemed okay when I put onesies on them for the trip home from the rescue, but we'll see once we're all settled exactly how they do with clothes. As thin as they are, any outings this winter is going require clothes, no choice.. |
