Hurt Yorkie I came home from work yesterday to find my Yorkie (Milo) with a fractured front leg. I took him to the vet and they set the fracture and placed him in a splint. The Vet is really trying to push surgery but said it's not necessary. Has anyone else dealt with this and if so did the Yorkie recover well with only a splint. Surgery is expensive and I just paid $750 at the vet last night. Milo is only 11 months and may have a good chance of healing fully without the surgery. I just want to know all my options befire I put the poor little guy on the operating table. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks, Jared |
I would get a second opinion from an orthopedic vet. If he also recommends surgery you should go ahead and do it as the best window of time for healing is soon after the leg is broken. You must have been horrified when you found Milo. Any idea how it was broken? I don't have the expertise to even try to answer your question -- you might get a better response if you post this question in the discussion category for sick/injured Yorkies. But I do have questions -- why would your vet urge surgery then say it's not necessary? Did he mean Milo would live without surgery but the leg might not heal normally? Do you know what kind of fracture it is? Simple? Compound? I would want a lot more detail from the vet about exactly what benefit having the surgery would have over splinting. And please keep us posted. |
I apologize, the surgeon is the one who consulted us about the surgery and I'm not sure of the type of fracture. He said without surgery there is a good chance that everything would be fine, but with surgery the chances of a full recovery are much higher and the timeline for the leg to heal was about 4 weeks earlier. My main concern is obviously for Milo. When I left the Vet I kind of had an impression that surgery wasn't necessary but was the best option. Unfortunately Milo does not have insurance (Stupid move on my part) and has already had his leg set and splinted. From what I gather the surgery is added insurance for future problems but not necessarily vital. Has anyone in this forum had a problem similiar to this where surgery was an option and elected to go with a cast/splint? If so how did the leg heal? Thanks in advance. |
broken leg Poor baby, I agree totally that you need a second opinion, especially when a vet says he thinks surgery but it really isn't needed:confused: Doesn't make much sense to me. If a specialist says it will heal okay then I would leave it at that. I wouldn't go strictly by what a GP vet says. It wasn't a compound fracture as then the bone would have come through the skin. That's a whole new ball game. Good luck and keep us informed. We will be thinking of you and praying they won't be surgery needed. |

I can completely relate to this post. My furbaby Lola, goes to daycare and somehow broke her 4 metatarsals in her front left leg. Just splinting the leg wasn't an option for me and I ended up paying around $2500....but it was worth every penny! Lola was in a cast for 6 weeks after surgery and now her leg is like new! |
So sorry your little one had a broken leg! I just went thru a scare with my pup, Annie, but she didn't have anything broken. If it was me -- I would take the first advice given -- get an orthopedic specialist's opinion. If he says your little one needs surgery, then I would do it. Might have to get a payment plan going. They may say to wait and watch -- that is what the ortho doc recommended for my son (human son) with a separated shoulder. He may have to have surgery, but they wanted to see if it will heal on its own. So we re giving it til Christmas -- if there is still pain, he will have surgery. I don't know if a broken bone can do this, but I would ask. |
In case anyone cares, Milo went in for surgery today. I didn't want to take any chances of him not being his go happy, enegetic self. Thanks for all the input. |

So sorry to here Milo broke his little leg. Sending prayers of comfort and quick healing to the little guy. Hugs to you for taking such good care of your baby! Milo is so lucky to have such a great mommy. |

I'm sorry he had to go through it, but he will be better off in the long run. The weeks ahead will be hard for you and him. It's the future you want to keep your eyes on. You've made a difficult decision and that was for the welfare of your lil guy. I applaud you for that! |
