We're having problems with our new crate..Any suggestions? So Taz started out growing his old crate, I thought he would love the fact that mommy bought him a BIGGER crate but he doesnt seem to like it. Its one of the big metal ones..and I even jazzed it up with a nice soft pillow and his favorite blankie and toys.. He still doesnt sleep in it. I cleaned it when I first brought it home because I bought it as is (I didnt know if other dogs had been inside the crate while it was still at the store) He hasnt soiled in it..he just doesnt like staying in it. I put him in it and he walks right out...Any suggestions on how to get him to make this crate his domain as he did his old one? |
crate size I have discovered that bigger isn't always better, it seems to be us women that like all the space. I went through the same thing with Belle and she just wanted her comfy cozy old crate back. I have found that it's more secure to her than having all that extra room. Belle has a pillow, 3 blankies and her papa bear in her crate at all times unless she decides she needs to drag her favorite blankie around for awhile. So, I just stuff her in there and night and she is totally happy. It all comes down to them feeling secure. Hope that helps a little. |
Thankss anything helps! :) |
Was the "old" crate a metal one or the plastic carrier type? The reason I ask is that if the old one was the carrier type, then it had more "closure" around the sides. You might consider a blanket or throw on top of it that hangs down the sides that makes it more like a "cave". We generally do that with the new fosters that come in. They like having "their own" place. |
Yes the old crate was a carrier, very small and snugg. Ive tried the blanket over the top and he still doesn't like it. I was wondering if I should close the door and maybe keep him in there for a little while. Whatcha think?? |
Does the crate have a divider that you could put up for a little while to make it more "cozy"? Also, you can try to make it a fun place by giving him his favorite treats on there. At this point, I wouldn't try locking him in there. You don't want him getting a bad association with it. |
I have a blanket over Quincy's makes in dark and comfy cozy for him. I tell him time for bed and he runs to his crate. Too funny! |
The divider trick is a good idea. I did mention this to a trainer friend of mine today, he indicated that the size could be an issue. Most dogs seem to like crates that just give them enough room to turn around in and lay the opposite direction. Heck, I have found two of ours in the small animal crate all layed up on top of each other....it right beside a massive dog bed that I would sleep on it's so comfy. Sometimes I really would like to know their thoughts. |
Thanks for the advice. I hid some treats in the and I got him a super duper cozy microplush blanket..along with a padded mat and some toys. When I came home this evening he was soooooo knocked out he didnt even hear me! Soo I think it just took some time getting use to.. My only problem is.. I put the crate in the living room and I prefer it to be in the bedroom. I dont want him that far from me.. I heard switching the location of the crate isnt good. Oh no.. :( |

Shay does the same thing, it is so adorable...seeing there lil butts running in there.... |
He slept in the bed with me last night.. and when i woke up he was in his new crate. I do feel as if, it may be T00 big for him but he's slowly adjusting to it. Thanks for your advice!! I love this site! |
