This is a very interesting discussion and when I first started to read it I figured it would be 90% in favor of a girl dog...boy I was wrong. Over my lifetime we have had many dogs of varying breeds but one thing was always the same, the boy dogs were always more loving and cuddly. So, when we decided to get a Yorkie we knew we wanted a boy and never even looked at any girls. Memphis is now 15 weeks and is very loving and cuddly which is exactly what we were looking for. Also, his potty training is going very well for a Yorkie. I would pick a boy if it was me. |

Congrats OP on your new BOY:thumbup: This thread was so meant to be, I'm going Sunday to see about a sibiling for Dudley...Going "open minded" for gender.:rolleyes: My first Yorkie was F, and you all described her to a "T"- SHE WAS MISS. INDEPENDENT !! Loved her so....When she passed I wanted another girl, WE LOOKED AT SEVERAL, BUT when Dudley was in my arms, there was something there, (besides his:eek:) that won our hearts....I think it was because we weren't meant to have a girl then. So Sunday, we'll see.....I'm beside myself and can't wait for 1 p.m Sunday to get here:) |
I have a girl. I can not believe how affectionate she is. She is always loving on whomever she can. Me most :-) I have always preferred girls--that is because I live in a house of boys! So now it's a bit more even on my side. My next will also be a little girl... then maybe a boy. In my opinion do not buy unless you are completely happy with the decision. I knew if I had got a boy I would LOVE him but I would still want a girl--and would still have to get one. The right pup will come along, and you'll know :-) I had my heart set on a girl and found a great one. Or get one of both, it'll eventually happen anyway. You will want another and another. |
I have one of each. Overall, Rhett is more cuddly and Scarlett more independent. But I adore both of them. Not that Scarlett isn't cuddly, too- it's just that we cuddle when SHE wants to, not always when I want to. |
We're naming him Psyche :) Silly me didn't think to take a photo of him, but I definitely will next time I go see him (or ask the breeder to email me one). Can't wait for the little furbaby to actually get here!! |

I think that it is best to pick the personality of the dog that would best suit your lifestyle. the breeder should do a temperament assessment of each pup they have, and match the dog to the owner. Some dogs are more active, inquisitive, and need more exercise than others. Some are more aloof. Now having said that, when we were looking for our first dog, my husband always owned females, and I mainly males. We had lots of discussions about male versus female. What we came to was an agreement on the temperament we wanted. Our oldest male gets more affectionate every year. Highly intelligent, strong willed, and training is now a breeze. He lives to work, and is very secure in himself and our love. Our youngest male, has always be a cuddle bug. He as he matures is turning out to be ready to work and loves to train. Our female although quite affectionate, definitely is more aggressive. As she matures, she is trying to rule the roost. I hope you find a puppy that will make a good match for you and your lifestyle. |
My little girl is a champion cuddler, and absolutely loves everyone that comes to visit. I think Tinkerbell is the friendliest dog I have ever had. I don't really have a preference for one over the other. I have had both male and female dogs growing up and they were all special in their own ways |
I'm so surprised! Last time I saw a thread with this theme, boys were stomped on by the girls. In "real life" everyone I know does not want a little boy. It's like a sin to prefer the little boys. :confused: Anyway, I wanted to put in my vote for the boys. As I type, I have a little boy lying down asleep on my chest. It's making it really hard to type, and not sneeze (his ear hair is tickling my nose). This is typical and how I usually surf YT. Unless it's hot, Kaji will rather lie down on the cool floor than be in my arms. I love how much he loves me. This is totally selfish, but I like to feel needed, and Kaji lets me know he needs me. He needs to be fed, he needs to be played with, he needs to go potty, and he NEEDS to be held. I do love the girls too. The only ones I know are my friends yorkies and they are so much fun! They're always so full of energy and are ready for anything. |

went for the girl,came back with the boy I was "sure" that I was going to get the girl from the litter of two. We ended up really liking the boy. We were looking for a more passive dog. The sister was definitely more feisty, so we got the boy. He's mild mannered, a total cuddle bug, and just a sweetheart. We compared temperaments and went by that. At first, I was worried that he was a little too timid, but he's coming along fine. Now, we talk about getting another after I retire in a year. Any ideas? We've heard that a boy and a girl will get along better than two boys. Wonder if it's true |
I have a girl and I disagree she is almost too lovey and cuddley!! She is easy to train other than her mistakes in the house! |
