Desperate for Housetraining advice Hello, I have had my Yorkie for about 2 weeks now, she is 2 years old, and we rescued her from horrible living conditions. She poops in the house just about every time she has to go. I can take her outside, she sits there and stares at me, then comes back in the house and poops when I leave the room! its so frustrating. Does anyone have any tips, other than just keep taking her out? Because she goes outside no less than 5-7 times a day. PS..my husband is dead set against puppy pads in the house, so thats not an option. |
With a 'new' older Yorkie, I'd take her out every two hours, and walk her till she poops, then give her a treat and a ton of praise. Give her time on the walk and turn your back, so you're not looking at her. She has to poop outside and you have to reward her to show her what she did is good. If that doesn't happen, she's not going to 'get' it. Also, you have to ignore any accidents in the house... just clean it up. |
I agree with kjc - being consistent so she gets into a pattern is the best way. Mabel is finally getting potty training but it's a lot of time outside until she poops and pees. With an older dog I would imagine it's the same kind of training - more about training yourself and the dog will learn after a while. Show lots of praise and sound really disappointed with her when she messes in the house. Good luck! |
She should not be left to roam on her own until house broken....constant supervision is the key,try putting a leash on her inside the house when she is not in her crate or xpen keep it attatched to you ,that way you can keep an eye on her potty habits . congrats on your new addition and thank you for saving this little one:) |
We had the same issue with a three (3) year old foster we rescued, the owner said that he kept pottying in the house and that she couldn't take it anymore. When we took him out he looked rather confused, came inside and whamo! I talked to the "former owner" and said that he wouldn't get on the grass. She said "Oh, I don't know if he knows what grass is, he was an indoor dog". WHAT?! FOR REAL?!?!?! At three years old?!?!?! Sorry, I digress. You state that your hubby doesn't care for the potty pad, but we did get that fake grass pad and he started to use it...we kept moving it closer to the door each week...finally after about two months, he started to go outside. I personally think that potty pads are one of the greatest inventions EVER! To get him to poop outside, I would have to go out and "run him"....getting him going really fast (I guess it just worked its way out???) and he ALWAYS got lots of praise and a little treat when he did. His forever home had a few hiccups at first but after about two-three weeks he adapted fine there. |
