Help! Whining at night! Harlow woke me up this morning at five thirty whining her little head off and I don't know what to do. She just wants out of the pen. What do I do so that I can sleep and also teach her she can't get out everytime she whines? |
She's about three months old? She probably has to go potty by 5:30, that's good if she's able to hold off until then. Is her crate near you? When we brought Wrigley home at 12 weeks. We placed her crate on a bed table facing our bed, so she could see us. If she started to whine we could just put our fingers in and she would settle down, but I think this only happened once or twice. |
What all do you have in her xpen? It isn't a crate, right? She's very young. They are like babies. I had to get up with mine to take them out about 3 a.m. I don't know your exact set-up with her "pen" but it could be several things: potty, hungry, thirsty, cold, bored and lonely?:D |
She has a potty pad, her toys, sleep stuff, pretty much everything. I think it's because I was asleep and she wasn't lol she wanted out to play. Also when I saw her having an accident in the floor today, I put her on her potty pad in her pen and she was too worried about whining to go potty? What do I do? Maybe put one outside the pen? |
I wouldn't move the pad around. Being consistent is more important than just about anything you do. The lack of consistency is what messes up most potty training. People think if this doesn't work, then let's try this! What happens is you end up with a confused puppy.:) Are you strictly pad training and not taking her outside? Pad training can be more difficult. Just be consistent. Put her on the pad and tell her to go potty or whatever you say. Just go about your business. After she has gone, make a really big deal of it and tell her she's a good girl. Act like it's the best thing that ever happened and sooner or later she'll associate her pottying to praise. |
I just got my new puppy Natalie. I have a baby gate in the kitchen and that is where she stays during the day. She is 12 weeks old and ALWAYS go potty on her pee pads, she also goes when I take her out, but not always. At night she sleeps in her crate on my bedside table, she cries at around 5:30/6am and as soon as I take her out to her pee pad she will relieve herself. The funny thing is that I don't think she understands praise yet... She doesn't even understand treats. That's why I'm giving her time by letting her do her business on the pee pad before start training her to be housebroke. |

dont get me wrong these crates sound a good idea. but i would never put mine in a crate. its like putting her in a cadge. we put her bed in our room,so she knew she was safe. now i have no stairs. all on the one level, so when she wants to pee she uses her paper |

What kind of treat are you using? I agree with YorkieUSA, don't move the pad. I use one pad in the bathroom, and that's it. That's all I ever used since he was pad trained (granted he was 1.5 years old and quiet stubborn) and now he knows to come and "ask" for a clean pad (if I'm not quick enough to change it) or to ask for the pad to be put back down. What you can do to make it easier for her to "get it right" is make a bigger potty area. Instead of one pad use two, or three. Once she's consistent, start reducing the potty area until you are left with one pad. As far as whining goes, if she has everything she needs in her pen, it really could be loneliness and boredom. You can buy her a companion. There are these stuffed animals that they make for puppies so they won't feel lonely. They have a heartbeat and sometimes a heating pad, so it's like they have a litter mate to keep them company. |

The crate seems to be better for Harlow. She's adjusting well to it. And when I take her out I put her directly on the potty pad. She's doing well and not whining as much as she does when she's in the pen. :) |

She only whines when I first put her in but then I cover the front of it with a pillow case and she is fine. Last night she slept all night in the crate and only got out at three thirty for a potty break. She was fine after that and layed back down :) |
